I worked with children with varying disabilities in a camp setting and it was a great experience for my major. It really helped me gain experience in the field.
What I wish was different
I wish that the program was longer because I really connected with my campers and it was hard to say goodbye to them at the end.
Advice
Get ready to put in a lot of time and effort. This is not the easiest field to work in, but it is so worth it.

Therapeutic Recreation Intern
May - August 2019 • Virginia Beach, VA
What I liked
The Therapeutic Recreation department has an amazing internship opportunity. I met so many amazing staff members throughout my time there. Along with amazing staff, I was able to sit in on city meetings. I now have experience working with children with special needs in a community setting. I had the opportunity to work with children in an after school setting and in an instructional summer day camp. The supervisors are approachable and want to see you succeed.
What I wish was different
Nothing, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience!
Advice
This is a community setting so if you are interested in completing an internship here make sure that you would like to be involved in the community. Specifically, you should have a desire to work with children ages 6-22. You should also be comfortable with stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying different programs.
