GBCS Group

Front End Developer

May - August 2023 • Calgary, Alberta

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship experience at GBCS Group and SkyIT, especially when it came to my role in Front End Development. What stood out the most to me was the fantastic team dynamic that made it easy for me to integrate and contribute effectively. Here are a few aspects of my experience that I truly appreciated: 1. Team Collaboration: One of the highlights of my internship was the welcoming and collaborative team environment. From the very beginning, I felt like a valued member of the team, and my opinions and ideas were genuinely considered. This made it easy to share my thoughts and contribute to projects without hesitation. 2. Learning from Mistakes: I particularly liked the company's approach to mistakes. There was a prevailing attitude that it's okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. This mindset created a safe space for me to experiment, try new things, and not fear the consequences of making errors. It allowed me to grow as a developer and gain confidence in my abilities. 3. Mutual Support: Instead of complaining about tight deadlines or not meeting desired outcomes, the team had a habit of coming together and helping each other out. This sense of mutual support was refreshing. It fostered a positive work environment where we could collectively tackle challenges and overcome obstacles. It was clear that the focus was on the end result rather than finger-pointing. 4. Continuous Learning: Another aspect that I truly appreciated was the emphasis on continuous learning. I had access to resources, mentorship, and training opportunities that helped me enhance my Front End Development skills. This commitment to personal and professional growth not only benefited me but also contributed to the overall success of the team. In summary, my internship at GBCS Group and SkyIT was a highly enriching experience. The positive team dynamics, the willingness to learn from mistakes, the culture of mutual support, and the commitment to ongoing learning were aspects that I genuinely liked. This internship not only improved my technical skills but also shaped my perspective on how effective teams operate. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such an inspiring and supportive work environment.

Digital Marketing Intern

July - September 2023 • Calgary, Alberta

What I liked

I had the opportunity to learn graphic design on new platforms I had not previously worked on. For the first few weeks of my internship I was working on content creation for Instagram and LinkedIn and really enjoyed it.

What I wish was different

It would have been a better experience with leadership and mentorship. My team was unable to get in contact with full-time employees. It was just a team of interns leading and working with each other instead of being taught and learning skills relevant to my future career.

Advice

The job title that you apply for may not be the job that you end up doing. However, there is still good experience to gain at this company

GBCS HR Intern

July - September 2023 • Calgary, Alberta

What I liked

The other interns I worked with, specifically on the HR team made a great time and I learned a lot from them. I worked directly with the Executive Director Shahab and he gave me various leadership opportunities. Hiba, the CEO, would often join our meeting and give useful career advice.

What I wish was different

Everyone on the teams were unpaid interns and most only stayed for 3 months. This allowed for not a lot of organization as people were constantly filing in and out and there were no paid employees on the team, so there were no experienced professionals to learn from, other the Executive Director Shahab who overlooked all the interns. Alhtough Shahab was great to learn from, there were no HR employees to learn from.

Advice

Be ready to work hard as they demand a lot from you, asking to work on weekends at times. This experience allowed me to learn a lot about HR and working in a cooperate team.
