Job Summary:

 

This recruitment will be used to fill up to 2 full-time Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 positions for the Facilities Services department at Oregon State University (OSU).

 

Our teams construct, protect, repair, maintain, and preserve the physical facilities and utility systems of the University. We provide timely, cost effective, and professional services that enhance the instructional, research, and service goals of the University. The results of this program affect the entire University student body, faculty, and staff. The purpose of this position is to maintain a clean, attractive landscape and safe environment for the main campus grounds and other properties.

Key Responsibilities

 

15% Tree Maintenance

 

• Supports the campus through the application of specialized skills in tree maintenance.

• Assists in selecting varieties to be planted.

• Conducts tree hazard evaluations.

• Recommends removal/hazard abatement; plants, prunes, fertilizes, mulches and removes trees.

• Will use chainsaw, brush chipper and high reach equipment in execution of duties.

 

15% Irrigation

 

• Applies irrigation to all plants as needed.

• Repairs damaged irrigation parts and systems.

• Programs electronic controllers to apply optimum amount of water to plants utilizing the “Maxi-com” system or standalone controllers.

 

15% Maintaining shrub beds

 

• Assist in selected varieties to be planted.

• Plants, prunes, fertilizes, mulches and removes shrubs.

 

10% Employee Oversight

 

• Plans, coordinates, directs, and trains the work of a grounds maintenance crew which may consist of lower level grounds maintenance workers, laborers, students, temporary employees, and volunteers.

• Performs in conjunction with and coordinates work with other employees; assists supervisor by planning, assigning, and inspecting other’s work in the unit, adjusts work assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and responds to fluctuating workloads.

• Monitors employee performance and provides input to supervisor.

• Assesses training needs of staff with different backgrounds and experiences; Assists supervisor in providing appropriate instruction to meet unit and division goals.

• Assists in providing initial orientation to new employees including expectations for a welcoming and inclusive workplace climate.

• Operates a variety of motorized landscape equipment and instructs others in safe and proper use.

 

10% Turf/athletic fields

 

• Mowing

• Fertilizing

• Aeration

• Renovation of turf fields.

 

10% Hardscape

 

• Clean walks, remove hazards and maintain decks and patios.

 

5% Landscape Maintenance Plan Design

 

• Plans, designs and implements a landscape maintenance program for the area assigned.

• Typical tasks: Orders parts & equipment, then ensures the installation is done according to specifications,

• Performs on-site inspections of work areas to determine landscaping needs and evaluates the quality of the work being done.

• Takes and tests soil samples to determine the need for chemical additives or natural nutrients.

• Identifies and diagnoses plant and lawn diseases and administers or directs the administration of the remedy.

• Identifies specific areas appropriate to specific plant types and recommends planting and landscaping strategy to supervisor.

• Reviews and interprets site plans and architectural drawings to determine planting or landscaping needs; reviews work plan with supervisor to set priorities and monitor goals.

 

5% Safety

 

• Identifies and eliminates safety hazards campus wide. (i.e. broken glass, debris, hanging branches, storm damage)

 

5% Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

 

• Maintains plants in healthy condition, to enable the plant to naturally resist insects and pests.

• When necessary, applies herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides, selects the least toxic and most effective product in compliance with Oregon’s IPM regulations.

 

5% Snow and Ice

 

• Removes snow and ice as needed, applies ice melting products and sand to maintain safe conditions.

 

5% Other Duties as Assigned

 

• Any administrative responsibilities include, but are not limited to, becoming familiar with all construction standards, standard operating procedures, policies, and practices set forth for Facilities Services.

• Follow all business rules, SOPs, and administrative practices for work management duties using the current CMMS system.

• The position requires proficiency in using personal computers for email, daily timesheet entry, and work order labor vouchering.

• This position supports essential functions of campus operations, and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures. The incumbent will be contacted by their direct supervisor or unit leadership daily for extended University delays or closures to determine if they are required to report to work.

 

What You Will Need

 

• Pesticide applicator license will be required to be obtained and maintained to hold this position, based on duties. If the candidate does not have this license, they will be required to obtain one within six months of employment.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

 

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• Certified Arborist.

• Arboricultural experience in a commercial or institutional setting.

• Experience installing or repairing underground automatic irrigation systems.

• Experience operating commercial mowing equipment and other power equipment typically used for landscape maintenance.

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

• The work shift will be Monday thru Friday, 8 hrs. per day, 40 hr. week.

• Shift time: 8:00am – 4:30pm, or as required by university conditions.

• This position is deemed essential, and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.

• This position requires working a flexible schedule and may be required to respond to emergency call-ins, day or night, holidays or weekends.

• This position requires the ability to work outdoors for extended periods including inclement weather and may include: working from ladders and lifts; ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, or work overhead for extended periods of time; working with chemicals or fuels; and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. The position requires working in an environment sometimes containing dust, odors, temperature extremes, and high levels of noise.
