Are you passionate about supporting Native Fish Recovery?   Do you want to implement monitoring programs for ESA listed summer chum salmon, steelhead, and coho salmon and stock assessment?
 
Embrace this role to focus on monitoring programs for both adult and juvenile life stages of these species, this position operates traps, conducts spawning surveys and biological sampling, and enters and summarizes data for the district biologist.

 

Duties

What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Stock Assessment Technician will,
 
Serves as the Assistant Manager for the Snow Creek Research Station, Salmon Creek adult and outmigrant fry trap, and Jimmycomelately Creek adult trap.
Netting, handling, species identification, sexing, enumerating, sampling, and PIT tagging of juvenile and adult salmonids.
Conducting spawning ground surveys for Salmon and Steelhead.
Coordinating the installation, operation, and removal of temporary traps for adult and juvenile salmonids.
Assessing and responding to weather and stream flow conditions.
 
Interagency Coordination and Volunteer Crew Supervisor.
Coordinating volunteers and staff to count and pass adult and juvenile salmonids through trap during migrations.
Recruiting, training, coordinating and supervising volunteers to monitor traps and/or assist at traps with fish handling and identification of salmonids.
Using electronic media to maintain communications with wide volunteer base.
Registering volunteers and report volunteer hours.
 
Crew Lead Technician.
Training seasonal crew in the principles and operation of an inclined plane fry trap.
Insuring protocols are followed and response to trapping conditions is effective.
Reporting project status to District Fish Biologist on a weekly basis or as appropriate.
 
Population data collection, database management, and evaluation of salmon population estimates necessary for meeting interagency agreements with tribal co-managers for recovery and fisheries management purposes.
Maintaining population database for Hood Canal adult and out migrant traps.
Compiling population and bio-sampling data in SGS database using Microsoft ACCESS and EXCEL.
Preparing scale, DNA, and otolith samples for laboratory analysis.
Coordinates with the scale age lab and genetics lab in Olympia, and ensures collected samples are delivered in a timely manner and processes the results.
 
 
Working Conditions:
Work setting: 80% of the field work is on trap sites, which can be difficult to access.   Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Trap monitoring includes responding to emergent events related to weather, flows, and fish movement within 30 minutes of notification. Stream surveys include walking long distances of up to 8 miles a day on uneven ground, climbing over logs and wading in inclement weather conditions and changing flows.  Duties will require heavy lifting up to 100 pounds.
 
Schedule: Work schedule is variable, but is typically 40 hours over a 5-day period.  Work will be performed on nights, weekends, and holidays.  Overtime may be required.

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

 

High school diploma or GED including 1 year of high school science.

And

Four (4) years of experience as a Scientific Technician OR laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a health or safety professional, biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 

Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural or environmental science classes.

 

License:   A valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

Experience with trapping, handling, sampling, and PIT tagging juvenile and adult Salmonids.

Experience with spawning surveys for Salmon and Steelhead.

Experience with databases management, particularly the use of Microsoft Access and Excel.

Experience as a Crew lead or Lead Technician working in the field.

General knowledge of environmental survey methods.

Proficient in MS Word, ACCESS, and Excel.

Experience identifying, handling, and sampling adult and juvenile Salmonids.

Ability to: think critically; collect, record, and compile data; perform work in a safe manner; work independently and as part or leader of a team; accept and provide supervision; follow prescribed protocols and procedures; follow oral and written direction; develop and maintain positive, productive, respectful working relationships with coworkers, collaborators, and local landowners; make independent judgments in the field; perform a variety of outdoor work in inclement weather; tolerate difficult and sometimes tedious work conditions; abide by all applicable agency policies.
