Supervisory Mathematical Statistician

This position is located within U.S Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), Office of the Associate Administrator for Research and Registration, Office of Research’s Analysis Division. You will primarily be responsible for leading and managing a team of professionals in the analysis and evaluation of data to support programs that improve motor carrier safety.

The Supervisory Mathematical Statistician (Division Chief):

  • Provides leadership for achieving goals and creating necessary change in the Office of Research (MC-RR). Directs the development and implementation of a strategic data improvement and analysis plan to meet the needs of the agency. Determines program goals and directs statistical and economic analyses to support the programs and priorities of FMCSA.
  • Manages and directs studies and analyses that quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of major motor carrier safety programs, including roadside inspections, compliance reviews, the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) and the federal motor carrier safety regulations (FMCSRs).
  • Directs the safety impact evaluation of proposed motor carrier, driver and vehicle regulations, including cost/benefit and regulatory flexibility analyses, and directs the quantitative evaluation of existing rules for on-going (or changing) effectiveness after implementation of a regulation or other agency program that targets improving the safety of motor carriers, drivers, and/or equipment (vehicles). Provides necessary oversight to ensure that valid safety assessment and economic principles and practices are adhered to in every evaluation.
  • Serves as the Department of Transportation's (DOT's) focal point for statistical advice regarding policies and recommended practices of motor carrier safety programs. especially in relation to safety data quality and data. Provides expert oversight to ensure that all studies have statistical validity.
