The Department of Fish & Wildlife is seeking a dynamic Legislative Director to serve as a special assistant to the Director and lead our legislative affairs program. Decision making and Impact:

You will be a central figure in the Director’s Policy Team, making critical decisions that influence WDFW’s legislative and policy direction. Representing the agency in federal, tribal, and state forums, your expertise will help secure beneficial outcomes for Washington’s natural resources. You will also ensure compliance with state SEPA and APA laws, reducing litigation risks and promoting transparency.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Our Legislative Director will,

 

Lead WDFW Legislative Program:

Direct the agency's legislative efforts, advocating for agency-requested legislation and responding to legislation affecting WDFW's mission, regulatory framework, and budget.

 

As our Policy Advisor:

Provide strategic policy guidance to the Director and Executive Management Team, shaping decisions that impact WDFW's operations and goals.

 

Constituent Relations and External Affairs:

Serve as a key liaison for stakeholder groups, their lobbyists, and facilitate intergovernmental coordination to advance WDFW's interests.

 

Supervise Legislative Team and Rules Coordination :

Oversee the state and federal legislative teams, coordinate rule-making activities, and ensure compliance with SEPA regulations.

 

 

Working Conditions

Schedule: Typically, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. During the legislative session, the Legislative Director is expected to work additional hours, including weekends and evenings, to ensure the agency and its positions are effectively represented in public policy debates.

Travel Requirements: 

Local and statewide travel required, with occasional overnight trips to regional offices.

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in natural resource management, public policy, or a related field.

With, 

 

Previous experience working in natural resource public policy or a related field.

 

And,

 

Five (5) or more years of experience in the Washington State legislature or a similar policy-setting environment.

Knowledge and experience:

  • Familiarity with SEPA (State Environmental Policy Act) and the Administrative Procedures Act.
  • Knowledge of WDFW's core functions, programs, policies, and its stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with elected officials, agency stakeholders, and relevant interest groups.

  

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all of the following:

Master's degree in public policy or other related field or Juris Doctorate.
