Historical Document Transcription Internship (Virtual)

Patrick Henry's Red Hill seeks one (1) Archives Intern to work with the Director of Historic Preservation & Collections, hereafter referred to as “Curator,” to virtually assist with transcribing 18th- and 19th-century documents written by Patrick Henry and his descendants. This opportunity will allow the intern to gain practical experience working directly with archival material for dissemination to the public and researchers. The Archives Intern will receive scans of documents which they will transcribe into an online word processor.

 

Current or recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of history, museum studies, archives, art history, library sciences, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.
 

Position-Specific Activities

  1. Transcription: Transcribe handwritten documents accurately and efficiently, ensuring fidelity to the original text while also making necessary corrections for readability.

 

  1. Data Entry: Enter transcribed text into digital format, following established protocols for data organization and management.

 

  1. Quality Control: Review transcriptions for accuracy, completeness, and consistency, making revisions as needed to maintain high-quality standards.

 

  1. Collaboration: Collaborate with the Curator to ensure the smooth flow of work and the achievement of project goals. This will include regular communications over phone and email, and scheduled weekly Zoom meetings.

 

  1. Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility in handling a variety of document types, writing styles, and historical contexts, adjusting transcription strategies as necessary to meet the specific challenges posed by each document.

 

Requirements

  • 3.0 or above cumulative GPA
  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program in history, library sciences, museum studies, archives, or related disciplines.
  • Ability to commit 15 hours a week minimum.
  • Knowledge of cursive handwriting and ability to research antiquated language.
  • Computer proficiency, preferably with experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet project deadlines.
  • (preferred) Previous knowledge or understanding of the history of Virginia.
