Environmental Management System (EMS) Support Internship

The Environmental Quality division (EQ) manages and reduces environmental risks and liabilities within the City. The Environmental Quality Division has an opening for an Intern – Environmental Management System (EMS) Support. This position is nested in the Environmental Management and Operations team (EMO). Click here for more information about the team. EMO’s mission is to provide the City with exceptional service and leadership in environmental management. We run programs that meet the City’s immediate needs while advancing environmental performance and stewardship. We guide Denver’s ISO 14001 conforming Environmental Management System which is called the Denver Environmental Performance Program or DEPP. Although our work is inward facing, focused on internal operations of municipal government, we have a big impact!

 

This position will support the DEPP Senior Program Administrator and Analyst, who are responsible for the implementation and improvement of the management system.  Their work includes crafting annual workplans, standard operating procedures, evaluating environmental risk, facilitating the solution to complex environmental problems, and auditing environmental programs.  In this position you will learn and grow in your knowledge of the ISO 14001 EMS standard, you will learn about the operation of local government, and you will be exposed to professional practices used by a wide swath of business and government.   This position will support the City’s environmental training program by creating EMS/DEPP and facility compliance outreach content. 

 

The successful candidate will work at least 16 – 20 hours per week, and up to 28 hours if interested.  Depending on hours worked, the successful candidate will work in our Denver once or twice per week with remote work the remaining time.  We plan to start this internship in September, and the job can extend 12 months post-graduation.

 

As an intern you’ll get to experience:

  • Soliciting, collecting and compiling data
  • Formatting or re-formatting documents to conform to branding standards
  • Maintaining and administering records in PowerDMS and SharePoint and tracking and reporting metrics on various platforms
  • Assisting the Environmental Training Program as needed.  Learn to describe the purpose and operation of the DEPP as it relates to various City operations.   Creating educational materials including posters, fact sheets, and newsletter article content.
  • Assisting in the creation of a Corrective Action Tool within PowerDMS.  Learn to assess problems using Root Cause Analysis, and subsequently to draft Corrective Action Plans.
  • Drafting an Environmental Procedure document that mitigates the impact of operations on the environment
  • Taking notes, drafting meeting minutes, crafting and submitting brief reports
  • Taking advantage of developmental opportunities on the EMO team.  For example, this position may occasionally support Facilities Management colleagues for work in hazardous waste management, or other issues.  This may involve Investigating and documenting conditions in the field
  • Attending professional trainings, which may include ISO 14001 auditor training, hazardous waste training, and participating in internal/external audits for ISO 14001 certification
  • Other duties as assigned.  Other developmental opportunities as they arise

 

About You

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • A current student seeking a degree in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental biology, chemistry, or related field
  • Knowledge of environmental protection practices, or experience addressing environmental concerns or supporting an environmental research program, or resource protection program
  • Office skills, an aptitude for clerical tasks, including organizing information, records, files.
  • Proficiency in the use of the full suite of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency in graphic design preferred
  • Demonstrated self-organization along with good time management
  • An aptitude for communication and clear writing
  • Self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and the ability to thrive in a team setting, among a diverse group of peers, and contribute at all times to an atmosphere of inclusiveness and trust.
  • A desire to learn to collaborate with others and work with a team towards common goals.  Accept constructive criticism and use it to grow and improve.

  • Education requirement:  Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
  • Licensure & Certification: Requires a valid Driver’s License at the time of application

Location Flexibility

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.
