Refugee and Resettlement Case Management Internship - Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) CCDA

Refugee Resettlement Case Management Intern Position Description

 

MRS is dedicated to providing quality services in helping newly arrived families thrive in their new home country by providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict through employment services, job readiness training, adult education and immigration services, US healthcare navigation, youth services and many more state and federal programs.  Help current staff in assisting and managing social and emotional needs of individuals or families. Tasks  may include drafting case studies, performing initial client assessments, and creating summaries and recommendations.

Objectives/Duties:

  • Learn about acculturation challenges and opportunities refugees/immigrants have with legal status encounter after U.S. arrival.
  • Learn about services and requirements during the first resettlement period for Refugees, Asylees, SIVs, and Parolees
  • Hands-on participation in helping new arrivals settle in and on their way to self-sufficiency.
  • Experience how government social services impact the lives of new arrivals.
  • Enrolling clients in English classes
  • Following up with providers such as Social Security Administration and the Department of Social Services
  • Enrolling young children in Head Start and WIC programs.
  • Booking transportation for clients.
  • Guiding clients through the process of gaining a driver’s License
  • Submit change of address forms
  • Assist clients in their first grocery trip with SNAP/EBT card.
    • Help them understand shopping options and limitations on SNAP
  • Guide clients through the process of using public transportation.
  • Utilizing Common Help to assist clients in signing up for social services.
  • Transport goods/paperwork for signature/vouchers as needed.
  • Case noting services in refugee solutions.
  • Assist Case Managers by ensuring that clients acknowledgment forms are complete.

Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work closely in direct support of case management staff.
  • Time management skills are critical; ability to meet deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Flexible and adaptable regarding change in routines and duties

Time Commitment:  up to 8 hours hours daily, multiple days per week preferred. Dependent on school requirements.

 

Expectations:

  • Be reliable and on time; have a reliable means of transportation to our office (car or public transport)
  • Preferred, but not required: driver’s license with a clean record, at least three years driving experience, and a knowledge of the northern Virginia area.
  • Act in a professional and ethical manner in all interactions with agency staff and clients

Trainings Required:

  • CPS (Child Protective Services) Training – submit signed memo.
  • APS (Adult Protective Services) Training – submit signed memo
  • Review Volunteer Handbook and submit receipt of manual.
  • Criminal Background Request form
  • VIRTUS training – Protecting God’s Children within the first 45 days (attend and submit certificate)
  • IT Request (various positions)
  • Lifting Training/submit signed memo (various positions)
