Community Outreach and Volunteerism Intern - Migration and Refugee Services (CCDA)

Community Outreach and Volunteerism Internship Description (Stipend may apply) 

Locations could be Alexandria, Manassas, Woodbridge/Lorton area and Fredericksburg)

 

Migration and refugee Services (MRS) works to help newly arrived families find community and support to thrive in the US. We strive to provide quality social services centered around social justice and help people to understand US systems through ongoing support. The Outreach and Volunteer Intern plays a critical role in expanding the reach and impact of MRS by building and maintaining partnerships, engaging the community, and coordinating volunteer efforts. This position is responsible for working with our outreach team to implement community outreach strategies, developing collaborations with local organizations, and recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers. The aim is to increase awareness of our programs and services, enhance community engagement, and ensure the delivery of high-quality services to our clients.

Objectives/Duties:

  • Recruit and build relationships with community organizations and outside stakeholders and learn about best practices for volunteer recruitment and community engagement.
  • Learn about the challenges and opportunities refugees and other immigrants with legal status encounter after U.S. arrival.
  • To help the Community Engagement Specialist with day-to-day operations and manage active accounts for Migration and Refugee Services (MRS).
  • Represent the organization at community events to promote our mission and programs.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, schools, and community groups to expand awareness and referrals to our programs.
  • Help with presenting the MRS Refugee Simulation to local schools and organizations.
  • Assist in event planning and donor recognition.
  • Coordinate collegiate volunteer and intern recruitment and registration for the upcoming term; plan and co-present at various outreach and recruitment events, workshops, local campuses, and support groups assist in recording intern hours and maintaining departmental database entries; identify opportunities for MRS to participate in.
  • Daily operations management of the MRSDonations@ccda.net mailbox, replying, forwarding, and resolving donor requests as a result of the influx of Afghan arrivals in 2022/23.

 

Qualifications:

  • Junior or Senior in College (be at least 18 years of age)
  • Open to other cultures and beliefs
  • Effective interpersonal & cross-cultural communication; adept in Microsoft Office
  • Flexible and adaptable regarding changes in routines and duties
  • Have a U.S. driver’s license with a clean record and at least three years of driving experience.
  • Have a reliable means of transportation to our office (car or public transport)
  • Act professionally and ethically in all interactions with agency staff and clients
  • Be dependable and on time.

 

Time Commitment

  • 4-6 hours daily on weekdays, three or more days per week (or equivalent); occasional weekend projects (could be more or less)

Experience earned: Non-Government Organization (NGO)/association management, public administration, fundraising and development, social work, peace and conflict studies, international studies, sociology.
