Our internship program aims to provide college students or recent graduates from 2024 with an opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of Emergency Management. This internship is designed to help interns improve in areas where they lack practical knowledge and experience. By interning with the Division of Emergency Management (DEM), students can use their experience to enhance their resumes and increase their chances of securing a job in this field.

The Division of Emergency Management (DEM) is responsible for developing and implementing countywide plans, training programs, and exercises to ensure that Lee County is prepared for emergencies caused by natural disasters, technological failures, or human actions. To promote the resilience of the community, the emergency management staff provides preparedness presentations to various groups, such as student organizations, homeowners' associations, faith-based groups, businesses, and institutions. The County’s Multi-Year Training and Exercise Plan is designed to ensure that everyone is ready to respond effectively to any emergency situation.

We are currently offering internships in the following areas:
*Geographic Information Systems (GIS)*   *Grant Writing*   *Mass Care Specialist*   *Strategic Planning* 

Duties and Responsibilities

*Geographic Information Systems (GIS)*  
Jump into the world of emergency management by helping gather, process, and manage critical spatial data. Work with GIS software like Esri ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online to create maps, conduct analyses, and visualize data that supports emergency planning and decision-making. Contribute to developing response plans, identify vulnerable areas, and collaborate with stakeholders to support community resilience. Assist in creating training materials and stay up-to-date on the latest trends in GIS and emergency management.

*Grant Writing* 
Join us in the exciting world of grant research and proposal development! Explore grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, and corporate donors that match our mission. Help craft compelling proposals by conducting research, drafting content, and preparing budgets. Work closely with program staff to gather necessary information and ensure proposals meet funder guidelines. Sharpen your skills through meetings and trainings, while maintaining accurate records of submissions and outcomes.

*Mass Care Specialist* 
Help develop and implement mass care plans, working closely with local agencies, organizations, and volunteers. Evaluate community resources for mass care operations and assist in setting up facilities. Manage logistics like sheltering and supply distribution, while also aiding in volunteer recruitment and training. Keep accurate records and participate in drills to ensure plans are effective. Provide assistance during emergencies and disasters, including field deployments.

*Strategic Planning* 
Research and Analysis: Dive into industry trends, competitor strategies, and internal capabilities to shape our strategic planning. SWOT Analysis: Help identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for focused growth. Strategic Plan Development: Work with diverse teams to craft strategic plans in line with our goals. Goal Setting: Aid in setting clear goals and KPIs to track progress effectively. Documentation and Reporting: Prepare concise documentation of plans and progress. Stakeholder Engagement: Gather insights and feedback from stakeholders at all levels. Continuous Improvement: Contribute to refining our planning processes and tools. 

Education, Experience, Licensing

Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires current enrollment and attendance in courses at an accredited high school, college or university and completion of the 10th grade.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record is required.

Students must submit the items listed below to be considered for an Intern position:

  1. Three (3) letters of recommendation (from teachers, coaches, clergy, guidance counselors, employers, etc.)
  2. Current school transcript and any past transcript(s) if a degree was earned.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Active junior or senior college student.

*Geographic Information Systems (GIS)*  
 

Are you studying Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field? Proficient in GIS software like Esri ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online? We're looking for someone detail-oriented with strong analytical skills. If you're a team player with excellent communication skills and can manage your time effectively, let's talk! Experience in emergency management or disaster response is a plus but not required.


*Grant Writing* 
Are you a recent grad or currently enrolled in a relevant program like English or Communications? We're seeking someone with top-notch communication skills, a knack for research, and organization. If you're proficient in Microsoft Office and passionate about community development, let's chat!

*Mass Care Specialist* 
Currently pursuing a degree in emergency management, public administration, or related fields? Great! We're looking for someone with excellent communication skills, who thrives in a fast-paced environment. If you're detail-oriented, organized, and flexible with your schedule, we want to hear from you!

*Strategic Planning* 
Are you studying Business Administration, Management, or Economics? We're seeking someone with strong analytical skills and great communication abilities. Proficient in Microsoft Office? Detail-oriented and proactive? If this sounds like you, let's chat! 

 

Supplemental Information

Program Dates: The 2024 Fall internship program will begin on August 22, 2024 (or September 5, 2024) and end on December 16, 2024.

Internship Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities:  All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an Emergency as needed. During an Emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
