High School Counselor (2024-25)

General Information/Duties:

  • Works with individual secondary students to address their personal and academic needs.
  • Serves in step #3 of the progressive discipline policy (counselor referrals).
  • Work with parents/families of secondary students to increase their understanding and involvement in resolving their children’s problems, awareness and use of available resources for themselves and their children.
  • Counselor works with administration to develop a master schedule.
  • Responsible for scheduling of all high school students and the transition from 8th grade to 9th grade.
  • Develops initial referrals when needed for special education and/or 504’s.
  • Testing: includes registration administration, test interpretation of aptitude, achievement and other appropriate measures.
  • Hosts Financial Aid Information Night and coordinates Senior Awards Night Scholarship and program details.
  • Assist students with completion of college applications, scholarship opportunities and scholarship recommendations, and communication with college admissions personnel.
  • Maintains confidential student records, attends career preparation meetings, coordinates with LISD TECH Center staff to ensure proper student placement and monitors student progress.
  • Provides program information and enrollment assistance related to alternative programming to students and parents face-to-face. Collect and submit enrollment paperwork.
  • Review student performance with students and support team; carry out interventions.
  • Make referrals to local businesses and agencies for student circumstances and program referrals.
  • Keep up-to-date student records and accurate accounts of interactions with students and parents.
  • Be a team player; working with other members to improve techniques, relations with the community, and pool environment
  • Committed to continuous improvement through training and the use of technology
  • Perform other duties consistent within the scope of the position

Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree in school counseling preferred
  • A current K-12 Michigan certificate with an endorsement in guidance and counseling (NT).
  • Knowledge of the academic needs of high school students.
  • Training in chemical dependency/substance abuse is desirable.
