Day Camp Director

Description

  1. Thinks, communicates, and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions. 
  2. Works closely with leadership to ensure high-quality programs through creating and scheduling all camp sessions and activities. Implements and actively participates in all daily activities, curriculum, and schedule in cooperation with the assigned staff. Fills in for missing staff, when needed.
  3. Directly supervises up to 10-day camp counselors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with YMCA's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; coaching, rewarding, and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  4. Prepares site daily for arrival of campers and cleans up space at the conclusion of the program. Maintains overall cleanliness and organization of program storage areas.
  5. Assists in maintaining budget through purchasing of equipment and supplies. 
  6. Confers with day camp staff regarding child’s behavioral or learning challenges, and recommends methods of modifying inappropriate behavior and encouraging learning experiences.
  7. Ensures compliance with American Camp Association (ACA) and ODJFS requirements as they relate to program areas; including keeping required paperwork current. If applicable, complete all tracking, data collection, and duties required for funding, projects, federal food programs, PFCC, and Kinderconnect, as designated by the Youth Experience Director or designee.
  8. Ensures daily camp operations to all state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  9. Attends all staff meetings, specialized training, and safety training as required.
  10. Develops and maintains good relationships with children, parents, administrators, community, and YMCA staff.  Responds to all agency, parent, and community inquiries/complaints in a timely manner
  11. Actively promotes YMCA camp and branch programs to member families and applicable communities.
  12. Provides staff with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  13. Provides staff with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with youth.
  14. Requires staff to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  15. Responds quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  16. Responds seriously and confidently to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  17. Follows mandated reporting requirements. 
  18. Communicates to all staff the organization’s commitment to protecting their youth from abuse.
  19. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and viewpoints from all social and economic segments of the organization and community. A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism is expected from our staff.
  20. Other duties, as assigned.

 

Requirements

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age, have completed at least 2 years of college coursework in child development, elementary education, or related field, and have at least two years of experience as a camp counselor, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  2. Passionate belief in the Y’s cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people, and finding ways to help and support our neighbors.
  3. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  4. Must complete state-mandated concussion training immediately and keep certification current (renews every 3 years).
  5. Must submit all required paperwork for ODJFS Approved Camp status if applicable. Must obtain and keep current training certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED; child abuse recognition & prevention, and communicable disease as required by ODJFS.
