Recreation Specialist I - Part Time - Stewardship and Operations - 40648

The Part Time Recreation Specialist I –  ($20.74 per hour) Stewardship and Operations duties will include but not be limited to: 

Assist in the planning, coordination, and evaluation of stewardship activities that include large annual community wide clean-up and recycling events.

  • Assist with the management of the City’s Adopt-A-Program, cigarette litter recycling, and fishing line recycling programs.
  • Work collaboratively with city departments to accomplish unit goals.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to foster and sustain community relationships and partnerships.

  • Manage equipment and services needed for programs and events.
  • Assist with coordination of staff resources and volunteers for activity set-up, execution, and break down.
  • Utilize and track resources for stewardship activities; maintain statistics for monthly/annual and budgetary reports.
  • Assist with inventory control and ordering purchasing of equipment and supplies.
  • Provide manual labor for stewardship activities and clean-ups.
  • Assist in developing new outdoor/environmental programs and events to meet departmental initiatives.
  • Provide customer service and ensure/enforce safety standards, rules, regulations, policy, and procedures related to job responsibilities.
  • Supervise, mentor and/or coach part-time employees, interns, or volunteers.
  • Assist with departmental and city-wide programs, facility operations and events as needed.

Clerical:

  • Respond to customer inquiries via phone and email.
  • Operate office equipment including computer, scanner, fax and copy machine.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

MINIMUMS: Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as outdoor/park programmer, park manager, recreation leader or recreation program supervisor.

Must be available to work varied hours, days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs.
Will require to have, or obtain, a current and valid driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.

The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather.

All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.

Requires a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.

Average scheduled hours up to 27 hours per week.

As a condition of employment, all part-time employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided your training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.

Must be able to lift 50lbs. Must be able to work in outdoor elements to include heat, rain, and snow. Must be able to stand/walk for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to work extended shifts greater than 8 hours.
