Job Responsibilities:
The Georgia Department of Public Health is looking for a MPH student to support the Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) team. The Professional Healthcare Worker/ Student Intern will assist in case investigations, data collection, data management, medical chart reviews, and other clerical work. The position may include calling healthcare providers and patients to conduct interviews related to communicable disease surveillance, special studies, and outbreaks. Data entry and management responsibilities will include using various databases, including the Georgia state electronic notifiable disease surveillance system (SendSS), and the state immunization registry (GRITS). The Professional Healthcare Worker/ Student Intern will have the opportunity to learn about notifiable disease surveillance in general, the focus will be following up on reportable vaccine-preventable diseases, mainly Varicella, as well as Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). The position is intended for a student enrolled in an accredited public health degree program as the intention of the job duties is to provide applied public health knowledge and skills.
The Professional Healthcare Worker/ Student Intern will be employed for approximately 15-20 hours per week. The pay will be $15 an hour. The schedule is flexible and can perform job duties remotely, but should be able to come to Georgia Department of Public Health offices in Atlanta as needed. The position could fulfill MPH practicum requirements. As part of a practicum experience, the student will:
- Gain an understanding of general notifiable disease surveillance
- Learn about vaccine preventable disease surveillance
- Understand how case and outbreak investigations are conducted
- Have an opportunity to analyze notifiable disease surveillance, study, and/or outbreak data
Minimum Qualifications:
Student seeking Master in Public Health or related degree from an accredited degree program,
OR
Bachelor's degree and one year of work related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience conducting interviews or phone screenings
- Experience working with databases
- Commitment of at least 2 semesters
