Summer 2024 Marketing Internship

About Our Internships 

Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students experience and exposure to the health professional industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationship and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). Our Summer 2023 Internship is June 10-August 16, 2024.  

Application Timeline:  

Now-October 15th: Invitation to complete Pre-Recorded Video Interview  

October 15th-filled: 2nd round interviews & offers made. 

As interns at Blue Shield of California, interns:  

  • Participate in impactful projects during their 10-week program  
  • 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the health care industry, and more  
  • Are invited to participate in BSC employee events such as Employee Resource Groups, Employee volunteer activities, and more.  

Your Role 

The ​Marketing​ team oversees our digital customer experience, brand, employer market core business, Medicare marketing, customer acquisition, specialty markets, and Trio Human Maintenance Organization (HMO) marketing functions and responsibilities at Blue Shield. The ​Marketing Intern​ will report to the marketing manager. In this role, you will ​​​ be providing project specific analytical and implementation support and contribute to strategy development for our marketing teams.​​​ 

Your Work 

In this role, you will: 

Own and drive specific marketing initiatives including contributing to strategy development and leading tactical implementation. 

Establish an understanding of the key strategic partners in health systems organizations, along with their critical success factors to drive to specific business objectives 

Understand marketing principles and demonstrate ability to apply them strategically and tactically in the heavily regulated health insurance market. 

Develop and analyze key data for understanding the business landscape along with the individual health systems being targeted 

Provide critical marketing and project management support to the Commercial Marketing and Communications teams on key bodies of project work. Responsibilities include serving as the point of contact on projects, managing project plans and dashboards, budget tracking and reporting, event logistics, content development and tactical support, assistance with documenting operating model processes, and serving as a liaison to gather information for the team. 

Examples of previous intern projects include:  

  • Creating resources and tools to improve overall member experience  
  • Updating and optimizing Blue Shield of California’s Coverage LinkedIn Page 
  • Enhancing Sales Library and creating additional resources as needed  
  • Conducting research on current marketing tools in comparison with market and industry trends 

Your Knowledge and Experience 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree in business, marketing, finance, health care or related field 
  • Must reside in the state of California for the duration of the internship  
  • Preferred Qualifications:  
  • Currently pursuing graduate degree in business, marketing, finance, health care or related field 
  • Knowledge of healthcare ecosystem; health plan and payer economics  
  • Consulting and/or managerial experience 
  • 2-4 years project management experience working with cross-functional teams (paid roles, internships, volunteer experience, etc.)

Physical Requirements 
 
Office Environment - roles involving part to full time schedule in Office Environment. Due to the current public health emergency in California, Blue Shield employees are almost all working remotely. Based in our physical offices and work from home office/deskwork.
