Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students experience and exposure to the health professional industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationship and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). Now-October 15th: Invitation to complete Pre-Recorded Video Interview
October 15th-filled: 2nd round interviews & offers made.
As interns at Blue Shield of California, interns:
- Participate in impactful projects during their 10-week program
- 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the health care industry, and more
- Are invited to participate in BSC employee events such as Employee Resource Groups, Employee volunteer activities, and more.
Your Role
The Finance team oversees our finance operations, underwriting, analytics, actuary, corporate development, cost of healthcare, global business services, internal audit services, controller and finance shared services functions and responsibilities at Blue Shield. The Finance Intern will report to a Finance team manager. In this role you will play a key role as part of the various Finance and Actuary teams in delivering and collaborating on all aspects of operational expense, quality improvement, and health transformation initiatives.
Your Work
In this role, you will:
- Work within Finance organization to transform process and assist with management of strategic portfolio responsibilities.
- Support the end-to-end project management life cycle in all phases including people, process, and tools for requirements management delivery.
- Support the design, modeling, and/or reporting of value-based payment models/agreements
- Support the analytics needed to understand network configuration scenarios and/or provider contract negotiation
- Stand up capabilities and infrastructure to support financial oversight of a relatively new organization within the company.
- Assist in implementing member programs and resolving issues between internal and external partners.
- Learn key components to member program operations and will help in day-to-day operations and program improvements.
- Past Intern projects have included:
- Building Medi-Cal data models
- Building experience reports to show aggregate customer data
- Create dashboards to inform leadership of any changes to discount positions
- Build COVID-19 Databases
Your Knowledge and Experience
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree with an emphasis in finance, economics, and/or healthcare highly desirable
- Must reside in the state of California for the duration of the internship
- For Actuarial roles, must have take at least 1 Actuarial exam
- Strong Finance and/or Accounting with strong understanding of financial statements - primarily income statement
- A robust analytical skill set (Microsoft Excell proficiency)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing graduate degree with an emphasis in finance, economics, and/or healthcare highly desirable
- Experience with Hyperion Essbase
- Knowledge of healthcare ecosystem; health plan and payer economics
- Consulting and/or managerial experience
- 2-4 years project management experience working with cross-functional teams (paid roles, internships, volunteer experience, etc.)
