Junior Program Associate
The NSTMF’s Junior Program Associate (JPA) is responsible for managing the NSTMF’s social media presence, leading the creation and distribution of newsletters to key groups; planning, developing, and creating a comprehensive and dynamic resource database to support NSTMF’s inSTEM Scholars, and provide event support for NSTMF’s inSTEM community engagement activities.
Working directly with the Assistant Director of inSTEM Community, the JPA will lead and support the NSTMF’s inSTEM program.
The NSTMF’s inSTEM program is its most successful and visible program. inSTEM is a four-year mentorship program hosted at Howard University, the University of Texas at Arlington, and California State University - East Bay. inSTEM’s goal is to provide holistic support, substantive mentorship, employment opportunities, and power skill training to STEM majors to combat the alarming attrition rate of STEM majors from underrepresented groups. inSTEM is positioned, after three years of tremendous growth to emerge as a leading mentorship program for undergrads.
The individual in this role will benefit from a supportive staff, opportunities to expand their skillsets to benefit their academic and professional pursuits, and learn about non-profit, database, constituent, and social media management.
Specific Responsibilities
Database and Resource Management
The NSTMF is in the planning process of building a dynamic resource database to support our inSTEM Scholars. This resource database will include information about scholarship opportunities, relevant upcoming conferences and events, internship and employment opportunities, and any other relevant resources that will help advance the inSTEM Scholars STEM experience. The JPA will be provided the latitude to shape the database based upon feedback from NSTMF staff, Scholars, other key personnel, as well as the JPA’s personal experience. This database will serve as a bedrock tool for the inSTEM program and could have a positive outsized impact on the entire inSTEM program.
Social Media Management
The NSTMF has a high quality, curated, social media presence. The JPA will be responsible for managing the posts for the following platforms:
- Tiktok
The JPA will be responsible for using Hootsuite to manage and schedule the posts as well as generate the content using Canva. In time, the JPA will be given the freedom to develop and evolve the NSTMF’s social brand while also consistently posting and informing our community of the NSTMF’s work. The JPA will be encouraged to make suggestions on what social platforms the NSTMF should explore as well.
NSTMF Constituent Correspondence
The NSTMF and its inSTEM program have a number of key groups that require consistent and engaging correspondence:
- Scholars - undergrad STEM majors in the inSTEM program
- Mentors - professionals who provide guidance and support, and are paired with individual Scholars
- Coaches - members of host institution faculty or staff that convene inSTEM meetings.
- Experts - STEM professionals who are invited to participate in supplemental technical talks and information sessions exclusively for inSTEM Scholars.
Correspondence consists of Slack messages, newsletters, and at times, direct email. The JPA will be responsible for generating:
- A twice a month newsletter to scholars at each host institution (every two weeks)
- A once a month newsletter to mentors and coaches (at the end of every month)
- A once a month newsletter to all general newsletter subscribers (at the end of every month)
The JPA will also be responsible for creating and scheduling slack messages to notify Scholars, mentors, and coaches of upcoming meetings and events.
Additionally the JPA will be responsible for sending notifications to mentors who are participating in upcoming inSTEM meetings, uploading zoom recordings of inSTEM sessions, and support in the general correspondence management of the inSTEM program.
Event Support and Management
The JPA will support the Assistant Director of inSTEM Community in the hosting and creation of social outings for inSTEM Scholars, virtual and in-person technical talks, and other efforts to continue to build community within inSTEM.
The JPA should, in time, feel comfortable expressing ways in which the NSTMF can better serve its inSTEM community including: creative outings for inSTEM members, activities and experiences that open Scholars up to career opportunities, and general social outings that would be fun for all inSTEM community members.
