Personal Trainer Internship

Program Description

The internship program at AIM Human Performance is designed to give the intern a deeper understanding of the profession of personal training while developing the skills to become a personal trainer. The intern will be fully immersed in the day-to-day business of AIM Human Performance and the AIM Longevity Lab and will have the opportunity to experience every role from client, trainer, and business owner. Subjects that the intern will be exposed to included, but are not limited to, anatomy, biology, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, psychology, engineering, communication, and motor learning. While these subjects are important to personal training, they are not exclusive to it, thus this internship will provide valuable experience for anyone exploring the professions of physical therapy, occupational therapy, cardiac rehab, athletic conditioning, coaching, physical education, group exercise instruction, dietetics/sports nutrition, corporate wellness director, gym manager, and more. Interns will dive deep into assessment techniques, intake procedures, program design, progressions, addressing injuries and diseases, and exercise mechanics.

Whether in a private studio, or in a big gym, personal trainers are their own boss and are responsible for growing and maintaining their “business.” Interns will participate in marketing and sales to bring in new clientele as well as provide customer service to current clients. Interns will also have the chance to participate in networking events, contribute to marketing campaigns, and assist with social media. They will also be expected to participate in the daily tasks of running a gym by assisting with administrative chores and studio maintenance. In addition, interns will be expected to assist with the new AIM Longevity Lab, the recovery side of the gym. They will perform customer service duties, maintenance, work on social media campaigns, and attend outside networking events. Interns may be asked to assist with our Boxing and Strength Training class sponsored by INOVA, our Pink Ribbon post-rehabilitative breast cancer exercise program, events with our nutrition coach, the Eat Well, Live Well Book Club, and ongoing projects with the local library branch.

It is expected that the intern will conduct themselves professionally at all times and act as a representative of the company. This internship will focus on building the skills of time management, professionalism, and critical thinking. The intern may be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement to protect company investments/ideas.  Failure to comply with this or failure to meet the below requirements may result in a dismissal from the program.

Interns will have stated goals for each week in the internship program, are required to maintain a daily journal, and must complete 3 projects. Interns will log observation hours and are required to participate in weekly study group sessions with the personal training staff. They may use the gym for personal workouts when not working and may use the recovery services at the AIM Longevity Lab.
