Job: Workforce Development & Education Student Assistant (Media and Communications)

Description: The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) Workforce Development & Education (WD&E) Department has one (1) opening for the role of Media & Communications Student Assistant, to assist with supporting the department on a part-time basis during the school year, transitioning to full-time work during the summer. The Media & Communications Student Assistant will support the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) internships and outreach events hosted by WD&E at Berkeley Lab. This role is currently a hybrid role, with some in-person and some remote work based on departmental needs. Job duties include (but are not limited to): writing informational and feature articles about our internship and outreach programs; copywriting for web pages, brochures, recruitment materials, etc.; updating our social media platforms with announcements and features; researching and compiling written materials for inclusion in reports, generating promotional materials and/or invitations to special events, conducting short interviews with others to generate content for reports, maintaining program forms and records for frequent departmental use, and other duties, as needed. In this role, you may produce content for WD&E brand assets, program forms/assets, website, articles, promotional materials, videos, social media, and features about program participants. 

We hope to have this position filled for at least one year, with the possibility of extension beyond this time. 

Strong applicants will have:

  • Strong written communication skills and email etiquette.
  • Experience using Zoom and other online collaboration tools.
  • Experience with organizational social media and branding.
  • Proficiency in office software (e.g., Google applications, MS Word, Excel).
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization (e.g., charts, graphs, tables, infographics).
  • Copywriting knowledge and experience. 
  • Proficient in communication via social media platforms.
  • Experience finding, reading, and summarizing published literature, reports, etc. 
  • Familiar with the production process, and has a network with a creative team (e.g., designers, artists, videographers, journalists). 
  • Strong writing and editing skills. 
  • Strong demonstrated attention to detail, with the ability to produce quality work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in teams.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Willingness to work in a flexible, changing environment.
  • Ability to research new opportunities and provide a point-of-view to inform decision making.

Preferred (but not required):

  • Knowledge of photography and photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop. 
  • Experience working with different types of files and images (.pdf, .docx, .jpeg, .png, etc.).
  • Knowledge of visual design, graphic design and website design. 
  • Experience working with Canva to plan and design social media posts. 
  • Experience working with WordPress.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience with science, scientific research, and/or STEM education.

Requirements: Currently enrolled undergraduates pursuing a degree at a college or university are eligible to apply for this opportunity. 

Compensation: Pay is dependent on degree progress (i.e., year in school) and ranges from $16.32-$20.15/hour.
