Correctional Officer

The Western Virginia Regional Jail is seeking applicants for full-time Male & Female Correctional Officers.

Applicants must be at least 20 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency, be a U.S. citizen, hold a valid Virginia driver’s license, and pass a background investigation. No specific experience is required, but courses in the field of criminal justice and or corrections is preferred. Prior skill sets in typing or computer operation are also preferred. The qualified applicants will perform routine protective services work in providing care and maintaining security for inmates being held in the Western VA Regional Jail and processing inmates into custody.

This is a 12 hour shift position, with either a rotating or permanent day or night schedule, TBD based on the needs of the organization at time of hire. Each shift consists of a long week-5 days on/2 days off and a short week-2 days on/5 days off rotation, allowing the employee to be off every other weekend, Friday-Sunday. Officers work 14 days per month, allowing them more time with family and friends, for appointments and other commitments, etc.

* Makes security rounds of housing units in accordance with WVRJ policy and procedure

* Current and up-to-date on housing unit status at any given time (inmate count, inmate location, lock down status, maintenance issues, status of housing unit activity such as medical, commissary, etc.)
