Overview
Are you a student or recent graduate interested in learning about local government and working to make a direct impact in the community? If so, the City of Alexandria is looking for college students, recent college graduates, or advanced degree candidates to fill internship positions throughout our various departments for the Summer of 2023. These positions are unique opportunities intended for educational and training purposes that benefit the employee as well as the City.

Departments & Opportunities

The City will align applicant fields of study and interests with the needs of the respective departments. Internships are temporary, part-time and full-time positions with a duration of 8-10 weeks. Internship Opportunities may include: Policy Research Intern, Communications Interns, Engineering Interns, Legal Intern, Internal Auditor Intern, Historic Preservation Intern, HR Support Staff Intern, Fiscal Services Intern, Security Analyst Intern, Telecommunications Analyst Intern, Network Engineer Intern, Support Engineering Intern, Social Media Content Creator Intern, and more.

The Opportunity
  • Executes various tasks, analysis and operational procedures in support of departmental operations by developing and preparing reports, and revising manuals memoranda and similar materials;
  • Conducts studies by researching assignments, organizing and analyzing factual information in databases, and presenting conclusions either in oral or written reports;
  • Participates in training sessions that contribute to operational development;
  • Executes various tasks in support of departmental operations;
  • Develops relationships between programs and various agencies; and
  • Performs related work as needed.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
The candidate must either be enrolled in an accredited college/university and have completed at least two years of academic coursework (60 credit hours or equivalency); have earned a Bachelor's or master's degree within the previous two years; or currently enrolled in an advanced degree program from an accredited college/university; with a beginning, moderate, or intermediate proficiency in MS Office Suite reflective of their tier of education.
