Public Relations/Marketing Intern II

Public Relations/Marketing Intern II - This position is for a paid internship for the summer of 2023. We seek to hire two students who will be working within our Division of Fire in the Marketing/Public Relations section. The rate of pay is $13.35 per hour. Summer internships will start May 15-22, 2023.  

Desired Area of Study: Public Relations, Social Networking, Digital Design, Web Design, Marketing, Graphic Design. 
Desired GPA: 2.50 or better 
Desired Student: College - rising junior or senior.
Work Hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday (may vary according to the selected student's availability).
Work Location: 7721 E Parham Rd, Henrico, VA 23228 
Expected Start Date: May 15 - 22, 2023. 
Expected End Date: To be determined based on the needs of the department and the availability of the students selected. The internship does have the possibility to continue beyond summer. 
Internship Status: This is a paid internship position at the hourly rate of $13.25 per hour, up to 29 hours per week.  

The intern may be a part of a variety of duties to shadow, perform or provide:
  • Assist to promote public awareness of DOF events, recruitment efforts, programs, and activities.
  • Participation in public events in support of DOF outreach, in conjunction with other branches of the Division.
  • Basic administrative support including filing, ordering supplies, receiving mail, data entry, word processing, creating spreadsheets, and other administrative tasks.
  • Coordinate the creative and graphic development and deployment of marketing materials in multiple platforms.
  • Assist and support the Division’s social media presence including the coordination, development, update and posting of content, in conjunction with division branches.
  • Records Management System: updating, retrieving information, reports, etc.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Desired Student should have: 
  • Related coursework in Public Relations, Social Networking, Digital Design, Web Design
  • Possess critical thinking skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and other software as required by the position.
  • Ability to adhere to County policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, Department Directors, and the public.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to perform independently and follow directions are essential.
  • Ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively.

Through the course of the internship the student will gain knowledge of:
  • The different services and programs offered by the Division that support the community.
  • This includes comprehensive organizational awareness; content development for internal and external stakeholders; organizational, project, or program branding and marketing.
  • The Division’s internal and external strategic communication efforts for all branches including but not limited to organizational changes, public education, safety, awareness, public events, recruitment, and emergency events. 

Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Internships may be paid or unpaid.
