The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Biometrician 2/3 located in either Juneau or Anchorage!

What you will be doing:
We are seeking an aspiring individual with a solid background in statistics and an interest in promoting scientifically driven practices for wildlife management and conservation. In this position, you will be a part of a team that provides support for wildlife research conducted throughout Alaska and on a diverse array of game and non-game species. If selected for this position, you will provide support to all aspects of research including field data collections, study design, biometric analysis, and the interpretation of findings. You would communicate with biologists and the scientific community through presentations, reports, or peer-reviewed journal articles.

Our organization, mission, and culture:
The mission of the Division of Wildlife Conservation is to conserve and enhance Alaska's wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. This position will play a vital role in assessing population trends, demographic rates, and threats to Alaska's wildlife, and will help identify novel solutions to maintain populations of harvested species and recover species of conservation concern before they become threatened or endangered.
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and well being are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.
Benefits of joining our team:
In addition to receiving a competitive salary and benefits package, you will be offered a unique opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the understanding and management of Alaska’s wildlife while also enjoying steady professional development through training opportunities such as workshops and continuing education courses, collaboration with biologists in all aspects of research including fieldwork, and engagement with the greater scientific community at conferences or as an author of scientific manuscripts. As a successful applicant, you will have a flexible work schedule and a choice among several duty stations.

The working conditions you can expect:
As the incumbent, you will choose to work in Anchorage, Douglas, or Juneau. You will be expected to communicate with your peers via regular staff meetings and routinely interact with biologists, biometricians, and application developers to ensure that high level service and best possible solutions are delivered for each project. In this position you frequently rely on remote conferencing tools for communications since the majority of biologists and team members reside at various locations across Alaska. You should, however, expect to travel as needed to work with team members and biologists at other duty stations or to conduct fieldwork. In this position, you will need to be highly motivated and expect to often work independently to provide biometric solutions.
We are looking for a candidate that possesses some or all of the following position-specific competencies (If you have any experience with the following, please document these in your application profile and cover letter ):
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of statistical theory and techniques of quantitative biology. Skills should include an understanding of experimental design, wildlife survey techniques, multivariate and nonparametric methods, generalized linear models, linear mixed effects models, hierarchical models, population size estimation using mark-recapture, line transect distance sampling, double sampling techniques, occupancy modeling, survival analysis, population trend estimation, Bayesian approaches, integrated population models, movement analysis, resource selection analysis, and familiarity with the R software environment. Applicants need not be proficient at all skills.
  2. Demonstrated ability to design and implement comprehensive scientific investigations to collect biological information, analyze and interpret data, and prepare accurate reports.
  3. Demonstrated ability to produce publication quality graphics and use interactive web app tools such as Shiny (Program R).
  4. Demonstrated ability to present sampling protocols, biological data, and analytical results in a clear, understandable manner to staff members and lay audiences. Ability to communicate in written form via technical reports or journal publications and in oral presentations at meetings and conferences.
  5. Demonstrated fundamental knowledge of biological models and the principles of population dynamics (e.g., population projection models, density dependence, growth curves).
  6. Demonstrated ability to apply statistical techniques to wildlife research or management problems and, if necessary, to develop new statistical approaches.
  7. Demonstrated familiarity with wildlife species common to Alaska and their basic life histories.
  8. Demonstrated interest and ability to conduct field work in rugged, remote, and challenging environments.
