This Scrub Technician / Surgical Technologist is accountable for the technical functions related to the patient's perioperative experience. The functions of this role include preparing the OR environment, and equipment, instrumentation and supply utilization. This person is responsible to the circulating RN and works in concert with the philosophy and goals of the department. This team member works in concert with the philosophy and goals of the department.
 
Unit Information: The main VHC Health Operating Room Department currently has 19 operating room suites, adding one more OR suite soon. This team provides care to surgical patients of any age. As a level II trauma hospital, the main operating room performs cutting edge procedures in the following surgical specialties: Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Spine, Orthopedics, Joint Replacement and Sports Medicine, General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Breast Health and Reconstructive Plastics Surgery, Gynecology, Urology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Robotics and Trauma Surgery. We have a collaborative relationship with the VHC Health Physician Group to provide the highest standard of care. What makes the OR team unique is that their leadership team and staff works incredibly well together and supports a work-life balance. The Operating Room Department is always striving to provide the latest and most advanced technology in surgical patient care. This is reflected on the state of the art Robotic Program as a Center of Excellence, Aquablation Robotic System for Urology, Mazor Robotic system for Spine Surgery and latest navigation technology for otolaryngology and neurosurgery. Last year, 13,874 surgeries were performed in this OR!

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of Scrub experience preferred.
  • Licensed Surgical Technologist by the Virginia Department of Health Professions required. 
  • Certification in Surgical Technology preferred.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required. 


Responsibilities

  • Gathers and arranges sterile set-up for surgical procedures.
  • Passes instruments and supplies to the operating team during surgical procedures.
  • Performs initial and closing counts.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases.
  • Operates equipment according to manufacturer's instructions. 
  • Uses supplies in a judicious and cost effective manner. 
  • Anticipates needs of the surgical team. 
  • Informs circulator of any changes in a surgical progression or patient condition. 
  • Inspects sterile items for contamination prior to opening. 
  • Initiates corrective action when a break in technique occurs. 
  • Adheres to OR sanitation and decontamination protocols. 
  • Adheres to dress code. 
  • Keeps specimens separate on the field and passes them off as soon as possible. 
  • Monitors and reports irrigation. 
  • Demonstrates responsible behavior as a health care professional.
