Dean of Students (2022-2023)

 
In alignment with the policy at the NYC Department of Education, all Classical staff members are required to become vaccinated to ensure the safety of our school community. Exemptions from this requirement will be granted for those with a sincerely-held religious belief or medical condition.
 
Position Reports to: School Director
Start Date: Immediately
Hours: 7:30am-4:45pm + some out of school time responsibilities 
Compensation: $75,000-$105,000 (Please note that this is a general range; salaries are determined based on credentials and years of experience)

Position Summary:
All Classical staff members share the undying belief that maximizing student achievement is at the core of their work. The Dean of Students is an essential part of the leadership team. The role involves working closely with students, teachers, and parents to maintain a positive school culture that promotes academic and character growth. Reporting to the School Director, the Dean of Students is responsible for:
  • Character Education
  • Teaching character education in every class once per week
  • Creating grade-appropriate, application-oriented, character education curriculum
  • Behavior
  • Creating clearly defined school-wide procedures for discipline
  • Tracking scholar behaviors and consequences
  • Intervening when a scholar is significantly disruptive
  • Communicating with the Scholar Services Team when a scholar with an IEP is suspended
  • Attending child study team meetings
  • Assisting the school psychologist with developing individualized behavior plans
  • Professional Development
  • Observing teachers and providing rigorous and action-oriented feedback on a regular basis
  • Creating professional development focused on behavioral systems and procedures
  • Ensuring that teachers are reinforcing the pillars and character education teachings
  • Attending grade team meetings as needed, based on scholar behavioral trends
  • Culture & Community
  • Supervising breakfast, lunch, and dismissal
  • Planning community gatherings with a committee of teachers and administrative staff
  • Organizing Family Advisory Council meetings and Parent Academy events
  • Enforcing uniform compliance
  • Participating in holdover conversations at the end of the academic year
Qualifications:
  • At least three years of teaching in a K-12 classroom with proven track record of maintaining high expectations
Successful Candidates Will:
  • Have experience as a dean or administrator (creating behavior plans, planning school-wide/cultural events, having difficult conversations with parents, etc.)
  • Show alignment to Classical Charter School’s mission and approach
  • Exhibit excellent work ethic and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate application of our core values: Accountability, Innovation, Professionalism, Rigor, Tenacity, Transparency, and Urgency
  • Have experience teaching in a high performing urban school
