LEAD DESIGNER

SALARY: $68,120.00 - $105,580.80 Annually

DESCRIPTION:
Cary, NC is looking for a design leader to join us as we redefine local government marketing and strengthen Cary’s presence on a national level. This role is ideal for a designer with a talent for identifying individual strengths and connecting people with projects to maximize the team’s potential. And as a contributing designer, you’ll lead by example, setting the bar and inspiring your colleagues with high-quality, on-brand, boundary-pushing work.
 
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Marketing and Creative Manager.

 TYPICAL TASKS:
  • Collaborate with the marketing team, partners, and other stakeholders to brainstorm, strategize and execute large-scale and high-visibility marketing campaigns;
  • Participate in the development of a marketing roadmap, setting goals and vision;
  • Work with project managers and stakeholders to identify and delegate creative work;
  • Provide brand and art direction to staff designers, videographers, freelancers and other entities creating promotional pieces for the town;
  • Design marketing materials including but not limited to infographics, digital materials, displays, brochures, posters, advertisements, trade show and special event displays and experiential design, and permanent and temporary educational and wayfinding signage;
  • Manage brand and creative asset libraries, providing assistance to staff with identifying appropriate assets;
  • Design storyboards and video graphics in conjunction with the video production coordinator;
  • Provide creative direction for digital communications including email marketing, SMS, mobile, and social media;
  • Manage relationships and contracts with part-time and freelance designers;
  • Work with print and web vendors to coordinate production of marketing jobs including estimates, proofing, and printing;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Required skills:
  • Exceptional skills in Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Illustrator, XD, Photoshop and Acrobat Professional;
  • Expert understanding of Adobe Creative Cloud and libraries;
  • Strong understanding of typography principles and color theory;
  • Strong understanding of branding and how it applies to visuals and marketing content;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint;
  • Thorough knowledge of marketing and design principles, practices and techniques;
  • Thorough knowledge of publishing techniques and print production methods;
  • Thorough knowledge of computers, office systems, and equipment;
  • Thorough knowledge of the internet and its use as a marketing/communications tool;
  • Thorough knowledge of social media platforms and best practice principles;
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Proven task management skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks from concept through implementation, delivering quality outcomes under specific timelines;
  • Strong conceptual thinker with ability to present concepts and designs to stakeholders in a clear, concise manner, plus manage project feedback and flow;
  • Knowledge of Cary’s objectives, culture, policies, programs, services, events and facilities;
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with people in a variety of roles across multiple departments and leadership levels;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Possess passion to work in an innovative and dynamic environment, handling a varying of duties, situations, and changes with an adaptive mindset;
  • Ability to recognize, research, analyze, and solve problems independently;
  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.

Bonus skills:
  • Understanding of and experience with HTML/CSS, responsive web design, Javascript, user experience, and mobile design principles as key drivers in digital design;
  • Experience in digital design including motion graphics, user interface, email layout, web pages, and mobile-optimized content across devices;
  • Experience and knowledge of accessibility principles as they relate to print and web design;
  • Experience with videography, photography, filming, editing, and digital asset management;
  • Experience with or knowledge of Salesforce, Salesforce Service Cloud, Salesforce Marketing Cloud.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a four-year degree in Design, Interactive Design, Visual Studies, Marketing, or other design-related field.
 
Preferred:
  • A minimum of five years' experience in graphic design working in a professional or freelance setting
  • Two of those years being in a leadership role
 
Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • Demonstrated leadership in a graphic design role (senior, lead, or manager)
  • A strong portfolio of work that demonstrates close attention to detail, a wide range of skills, and an active imagination
  • A positive attitude and the confidence to take risks!

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
