Village Director (Supervisor @residential summer camp)

Village Director – Seasonal, Exempt
Reports to: Camp Director
 
Mission: Sherwood Forest provides dynamic programs and immersive outdoor experiences that inspire and empower youth from under-resourced communities to discover their resilience, prepare for their future, and embrace their civic responsibility.
Sherwood Forest Camp is the only independent, non-profit youth development agency in the St. Louis region providing resident camp experiences for elementary school age children from economically disadvantaged families. We have a rich 86-year history, and with innovating programming being developed each and every year, a truly promising future.
 
Position Summary:
At Sherwood Forest, cabins are organized into grade level clusters called Villages. Village Directors are in charge of the well-being and organization of individuals within the Village, including both campers and staff. This position serves as seasonal, supervisory role within the Quest team.
 
Job Requirements and Responsibilities:
·       Provide guidance and assistance to counselors in their work with campers.
·       Help train, supervise and evaluate group leaders living in their village.
·       Supervise the daily routine and functions of the village.
·       Establish a relationship with the village group leaders and staff.
·       Establish daily village meetings.
·       Be available at all times for consideration of individual village group leader problems.
·       Review individual camper assignments with each group leader.
·       Assist group leaders with camper development and behavior management issues.
·       Get to know each camper in the village personally and through discussion with the group leaders.
·       Meet regularly with other administrative staff.
·       Assist in other administrative tasks as needed.
·       During staff orientation, establish village policies.
·       Read and comment on, as needed, all camper reports for the village.
·       Meet with group leaders to evaluate work performance on a regular basis.
·       With the village group leaders, conduct all camp evaluations.
·       Meet with the Nurse to discuss pertinent medical information.
·       Assist group leaders with routine paperwork as needed.
·       Supervise the village in maintaining a clean and orderly appearance in the village.
·       Assign village supervision duties.
·       With group leaders, teach emergency and safety procedures to campers.
·       Assume responsibility for any equipment issued to the village.
·       Supervise village clean up at the close of camp.
 
Qualifications & Certifications:
·       Minimum 18 years old preferred
·       Class E Driver’s License
·       Experience working with children
·       Prior experience with camp or other recreational activities with children desired
 
Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially with regards to accepting guidance and feedback
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with group leaders and campers
  • Ability to plan and organize camp programs and events related to their village
 
Essential Functions:
  • Ability to effectively communicate in person or by phone, and exchange accurate information.
  • Ability to work and navigate in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.
  • Ability to use visual and auditory abilities to identify and respond to environmental issues and hazardous situations.
  • Ability to endure and maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to work long hours.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Ability to visually assess the operations of the camp.
  • Ability to live at camp over the summer.
 
Considerations for possible Infectious Diseases:
Sherwood Forest is planning to operate Summer 2023 under the current guidelines and restrictions (if applicable) for any Infectious Diseases. All staff will be expected to adhere to all guidelines and restrictions in order to preserve a safe and healthy camp environment for each member of our camp community. The Quest program serves children from 1st to 9th grade. The Supports for Success (S4S) program serves camp alumni beginning in the 10th grade to help them ensure post-secondary pursuits and support them as they transition into young adulthood.

All those who attend or work at Sherwood Forest, are required to have age appropriate vaccines as outlined but the Missouri Department of Public Health & Senior Services (Missouri Statute 167.181). https://health.mo.gov/living/wellness/immunizations/pdf/2022schoolrequirements.pdf These immunizations are also required for students to attend school in Missouri.
 
Staff are also required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 at least two weeks prior to starting employment at Sherwood Forest. Documentation of vaccine status will be requested once a position has been offered.
 
Religious (Imm.P.11A) and Medical (Imm.P.12) exemptions are allowed and will be evaluated on a case by case basis. The appropriate exemption card and approval for accommodation must be on file prior to arriving at Sherwood Forest.
