What is expected of a summer camp staff member at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational & Conference Center?
Working at camp is probably one of the most demanding jobs that you will ever have… However, it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences too!
Staff are expected to serve as positive role models in the camp community. Staff will assist in the overall operation of camping programs providing guidance and leadership to campers and teens counselors. Staff will work cooperatively with Extension Agents and Adult Volunteers to provide a safe, positive, fun, and memorable camping experience for all.
Typically, 4-H Center summer staff have completed at least one year of college.
Strong candidates also have work and/or volunteer experience in 4-H, teaching, and/or youth development programming. Regardless of previous experience, successful applicants demonstrate certain personal attributes including (but not limited to):

We believe that camp is a place for both children and staff to learn and grow. Most summer staff have a primary program area assignment. However, we are seeking candidates who are interested and willing to participate in other programming areas in addition to their primary role based on each weeks’ specific needs.

On-site lodging, and weekly salary are offered all summer long. Salaries vary depending on experience and current certifications. Staff members are housed on-site for the entire summer and may only leave during designated times throughout each week. The work week usually ranges from 10am Sunday through 6pm Thursday with some variance depending on the week.

Updated Staffing Rates:

Program Staff - $260 per week with $10 additional per year worked and $5 additional per certification
 
Program staff members teach activity classes in the mornings; Coordinators will be actively supporting those teaching classes. Activity-specific training will be provided to all staff members to help successfully lead activities. Previous experience in particular areas will be considered when making instructor assignments. During the day when activities are not in session, staff members will be responsible for daily operations of the camp, to include (but not limited to): program planning, filling water coolers, general maintenance, helping with evening program, helping with nightly campfires and lifeguarding at the pool. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is offered free-of-charge to those who require the certification for their class and to those interested in lifeguarding. All staff members are required to obtain American Red Cross First-Aid/CPR/AED Certification which is provided free-of-charge during training.
