Project POWER (Putting Opportunities Within Everyone’s Reach) focuses on the areas of K-12 academic success and food insecurity. Our Mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. Upon completion of your service year, you are awarded an education award in the amount of $6895.

Your exact job description will depend on the partner site you choose for your year of service. Each job will fall under one of two categories.
K-12 Academic Success
In Buncombe County, a disproportionate percentage of low-income students and students with special needs are disengaged from school. Project POWER members in academic-focused positions serve economically disadvantaged students in high-needs schools, providing personalized tutoring and mentoring to help re-engage them in attending school and raising their grades.
Academic Enrichment Specialist positions are full-time (40 hours per week) for 11 months spanning August – July.
Community Resource Specialists
Before the global pandemic, food insecurity in the US was the lowest it had been in more than 20 years. Unfortunately, the 2020 pandemic catapulted food insecurity across the United States and now 42 million people, including 13 million children, are experiencing food insecurity. According to a study of Buncombe County performed by the Southeastern University Consortium on Hunger, Poverty, and Nutrition, nearly 35,000 individuals suffer from food insecurity. Project POWER members serving as Community Resource Specialists will:
· Assist in recruitment and management of volunteers to increase services
· Provide volunteers and agency staff with applicable trainings to increase the efficiency of service
· Provide community outreach to increase knowledge or access to services
· Develop tools that enable organizations to assess community needs and track clients served accurately.
Community Resource Specialist positions are full-time (40 hours per week) for 11 months spanning August – July.
