Summary of Duties: 
Under the supervision of the Executive Chef at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, the incumbent is responsible for supporting the chef in the preparation of meals for events at the Chancery and the official residence. The meals include formal and informal breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, cocktails and receptions and may have specific dietary requirements from hosts and guests. The sous-chef will also assist with identifying and purchasing Canadian and local ingredients. The incumbent will provide input in the planning and estimate of expenditures for food and supply required for events, keep receipts, verify supplies against order forms, log and update accounts and food/equipment inventories and identify supply needs. The sous-chef is responsible for the sanitation of the kitchen and food storage areas by following all safe food handling standards, including ensuring the cleanliness of the food preparation area, and the correct handling and adequate washing of ingredients and equipment. The incumbent will liaise with contractors and local suppliers to order supplies and conduct errands for the kitchen.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS 
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience. 
Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education: 
Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education. 
  • Certificate or training in Culinary Arts, Catering or Food and Beverage from college, university, school or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience. 
 
Language: 
  • English 
 
Experience: 
  • At least two (2) years of recent experience (in the past five (5) years) working as a cook in a restaurant, hotel, diplomatic mission, or similar service environment in the Food & Beverage industry. 
 
RATED REQUIREMENTS 
The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications: 
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications. 
  • Ability to communicate in French and/or Spanish 
  • Experience in meal preparations for large events of 30 guests or more 
  • Diploma in culinary arts from a recognized institute/college/university 
  • Experience reconciling budgets/invoices 
 
Operational Requirements: 
  • Occasional overtime will be required; 
  • Working hours are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday; 
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods of time 
  • Ability to lift over 20 kg; 
 
Conditions of Employment: 
Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position. 
- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period. 
- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
