Tax Representative 3 - Student Auditor Gateway Program


Introduction
The Department of Revenue (DOR) is offering a multi-year training program to prepare students of accounting to become qualified as a Revenue Auditor 1 in the Division of Income, Sales & Excise Tax.  We are seeking motivated individuals who have an associate degree in accounting, are enrolled in an accredited college/university pursing a bachelor's degree in accounting, and who wish to obtain on-the-job experience to becoming a full-time auditor upon graduation. Individuals selected for this program would receive tuition assistance for up to 3 years towards the completion of their four-year degree in accounting. 
This is the selection process into the 3-year employment training program with the start date beginning May 22, 2023. Bilingual (Spanish/Hmong) speakers are encouraged to apply.

Position Summary
Selected candidates will be fully employed as a Gateway Audit Program – Auditor trainee (Tax Representative 3). This position would be full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer to complete training and full-to-part time (minimum of 24 hours/week) during the school year while courses are being completed. Up to four hours a week may be used to complete coursework.

This Trainee level auditor position is responsible for reviewing and preparing assessment or refunds based on federal CP2000s, federal audit reports, and computer selected files; and pursuing non-filers based on predefined criteria. This position will also learn to audit individual income tax returns, credit claims, and have an opportunity to shadow and assist audits being done in the other tax areas of the department.

Salary Information
Starting Pay will be $22.13 per hour. Current state employees' pay will be based on the provisions in the Compensation Plan. This classification is in Pay Schedule 02, Pay Range 12. A 2-year probationary period will be required.

Job Details
The department will conduct a background check, fingerprint check and tax compliance check prior to making an offer to hire. Interview results may be reused in accordance with the State of WI interview reuse policy.

All state employees are required to report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not, and must provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
1. Associate degree in accounting, with an acceptance to an accredited college or university accounting program. (Note: Proof of degree is required before start date).
2. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite Products (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook) or equivalent.
3. Education, training, or experience with research methods and applications.
 
Additional preferred qualifications that will be evaluated at a later stage in the selection process:
1. Experience providing customer service (in person, written, over the phone, etc.,).
2. Experience with Wisconsin individual income tax laws.
