Development Engineer (Emerging Technology), ZP-0801-3/4

NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) located in Ann Arbor, MI is hiring a Development Engineer (Emerging Technology), ZP-0801-3/4 (ZP-3 is equivalent to GS-11/12; ZP-4 is equivalent to GS-13/14). The announcement will be open for 14 days; it is set to open on 2/8/2023 and close on 2/22/2023.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manage the design, development, operation and maintenance of observing system components including autonomous vehicles, oceanographic buoys, cabled observatories, and moorings. Initiate and develop proposals, executing programs related to design and development of data acquisition systems for autonomous robotic vehicles. Design and develop prototypes, systems, models, and direct fabrication as required.
  • Advise on the interpretation of new scientific data. Evaluate scientific data and criteria to contribute to development projects. Determine feasibility in the modification of data collection/testing procedures. Develop, maintain, and distribute standardized procedures for assigned methods or technology.
  • Apply project management to manage work, track progress of scientific studies and communicate progress. Manage specific developments executed in-house or under contract, providing project oversight, control, and management in meeting objectives. Contribute to planning and prioritization of assignments and participate in and track scientific projects throughout project life cycle.
  • Provide guidance and instruction to staff and customers. Communicate scientific information through formal briefings, conferences, and participation on committees.

Specialized Experience include all of the following:
  • Participating in the development and operation of oceanographic observing nodes located on real-time buoys and/or offshore structures;
  • Participating in the mission planning, deployment, integration of data acquisition systems, the integration of sensors for airborne and surface autonomous vehicles operating in a marine environment;
  • Assisting with the analysis of autonomous underwater vehicle data and data archive; and
  • Assisting in developing or executing oceanographic research proposals.
