Fire Accreditation Intern - Summer 2023

Assist the Fire Department in achieving international agency accreditation by identifying risk and developing strategies for continuous improvement in emergency response. In this role you'll be responsible for assisting with strategic planning, risk assessment, and agency self-assessment. On a day-to-day basis, this position works under the guidance and direction of the Accreditation Manager and the senior management of the Fire Department, with a concentration in Accreditation, Strategic Planning, and Risk Analysis.

Your internship will include impactful hands-on work within a department, networking, professional development, and building long lasting connections with other interns, mentors and Sarasota County team members.

This internship offers the opportunity to gain experience in the Fire Department’s accreditation processes and day-to-day operations relating to management of a Fire and EMS agency. Other learning experiences can be developed in relation to the intern’s interest and area of study within the field of Fire and Emergency Services and Local Government Administration. The program will provide the intern with a constructive review and evaluation of their skills and competencies, providing growth opportunities and direction to further the individual’s professional and educational development. By the end of the internship, the intern will:

  • Understand agency accreditation in the Fire and Emergency Services.
  • Participate in a community risk assessment and development of standards of cover for emergency response.
  • Work closely with Fire Department staff to implement the Strategic Plan.
  • Plan for and conduct agency self-assessment by evaluating performance indicators on behalf of the Fire Department.
  • Identify and recommend performance metrics, baselines, and benchmarks.
  • Monitor and track the progress of assigned tasks to ensure proper and timely completion.
  • Attend project meetings and manage special projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate with your department colleagues to make and influence real changes.


Internship Program Responsibilities:

  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years old, or age 16 with parental consent
  • High school diploma, or equivalent (if applicable)
  • Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!
  • Currently seeking a diploma or degree through an accredited secondary or post-secondary educational program, or within 12 months after graduation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ​​Students working toward a degree in history, public history, library and information studies, or museum studies.









About Everything Else

  • Program Dates: The 2023 internship program will begin on May 22, 2023 and end on August 11, 2023.  
  • Internship Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; some departments vary. 
  • Pay Range: $13 per hour (high school student) up to $20 per hour (Grad/Masters student), based on your credit hours earned.
