Furniture Conservation (Art History) Intern Summer 2023

Job Summary:

The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 600 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.

This position is in the Logistics and Support (L&S) Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), U.S. House of Representatives (House). The Furniture Conservation Intern will work with a responsive and collaborative group dedicated to providing exemplary customer service. This intern will have the opportunity to view the inner workings of the U.S. House of Representatives (USHOR) and learn about its operations. 

Responsibilities:
·       Shadow team members performing their roles, including the Furniture Resource Management team, learning about the design, space planning, and logistics needed to support an office and attain both functionality and beauty.
·       Identify, research, and document Antique & Unique furniture pieces within the USHOR inventory and augment our asset information in Remedy to provide background and historical data on significant pieces, such as when they were made or purchased, who the manufacturer was, what materials, construction techniques and finishes were used and how long have they have been in circulation on campus.
·       Document and report on: 
o  Condition reporting: what to look for when inspecting an item
o  Origins: who had it, how many were ordered, etc.
o  Photo research of the era in which the item lived
o  Identification of the style of the piece, specific design elements unique to the piece, architectural and vernacular influences, and its place in the timeline of furniture
·       Conduct research.
·       Meet with House and Legislative staff to discuss the history of different antique and unique furniture.
 
Qualifications:
·       Research skills in digital and analog formats
·       Able to quickly adapt to new technology/software
·       Observant and analytical, with strong attention to detail
·       Clear, concise communication skills, both written and oral
·       Passion for design history and furniture conservation/preservation
·       Mobility to perform site visits and perform light lifting of furniture
·       Currently an Undergraduate or graduate student attending a college or university
