Reporting Intern

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is looking for an ambitious Reporting Intern to join our award-winning Editorial team and work firsthand to develop dynamic and creative solutions for various projects and forms. This role will be a great entry into supporting the Editorial team and the organization’s mission and values.
Primary Job Functions:
  • Collaborate with and support the Editorial team in the drafting of internal and external written content
  • Report and write a variety of content for internal and external organizational projects for the website and printed materials
·      Other duties as assigned
 
Qualifications:
  • Ability to write clearly and succinctly
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft suite (Word, Teams, PowerPoint)
  • A natural sense of curiosity
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style is a plus
 
Education:
  • Enrolled in a 4-year journalism, English literature or public relations program
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • An understanding of short- and long-form writing (250-word briefs to 2,500-word features)
  • Strong typography skills
  • Commitment to accuracy
  • Commitment and passion for social justice issues
  • Commitment to the principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI)
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning
 
Additional Information:
Students are supervised by our Montgomery, AL staff. Interns are compensated by the Center. The Center pays a base of $644 weekly ($16.10 per hour x 40 hours per week), with opportunities for additional compensation through supervisory approved overtime. 
 
This internship is expected to begin June 5, 2023, and a minimum commitment of eight weeks is expected.
