Paid Summer 2023 Digital Communications Intern

Help us turn research into action!

Intern Objective: To support the Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP) and Center for Violence Prevention (CVP) Outreach Team’s efforts to facilitate behavior, industry, and legislative change to reduce child and youth injury (intentional and unintentional) and promote recovery. We do this through promotion of CIRP and CVP research and programs via web-based outreach (six websites, four YouTube channels, blog, social media, etc.) and activities focused on stakeholder engagement and education.


Project Tasks - CIRP
The Digital Communications Intern may assist the CIRP@CHOP Outreach team with any of the following tasks planned for Summer 2023:
  • Update and create search engine optimized (SEO) content on CIRP’s websites using content management systems running on Drupal platforms
  • Upload new content and update existing content as needed for CIRP’s websites and YouTube channels
  • Implement strategies to enhance CIRP’s digital footprint that may include creating new website content, social media campaigns, increasing inbound links, researching keywords for SEO, and monitoring injury science news and trends
  • Assist in creating effective social media posts and campaigns involving researching effective hashtags and trends, as well as preparing appropriate images and helping to maintain the social media scheduling platform
  • Assist staff in developing videos for YouTube and CHOP websites to promote CIRP research with the CHOP Creative Services Department
  • Create and execute MailChimp campaigns to promote CIRP research and resources, including updating stakeholder databases
  • Assist in coordinating logistics related to stakeholder relations, eBlast lists, and CIRP presence (PPTs, handouts, etc.) at stakeholder conferences and meetings with national and regional organizations
  • Coordinate with Creative Services to locate images for use on CIRP websites and social media channels
  • Assist with metrics reporting across digital platforms
  • Coordinate Outreach Team-related meetings as needed
  • Coordinate and track responses to external information requests

Project Tasks – CVP
The Digital Communications Intern may assist the CVP Outreach team with any of the following tasks planned for Summer 2023:
  • CVP website updates:
  1. Update Facts and Stats sections of “Types of Violence” pages (includes content development and keyword research)
  2. Update Related Content sections across the site (linking to new blogs, news stories, etc.)
  3. Assist with daily CVP website management tasks (content updates, adding press releases, news articles, and team members and removing team members as needed, broken link checks, etc.)
  • Help to develop/schedule social media posts for CVP’s social media profiles
  • Support the creation of internal and external e-blast campaigns to promote CVP research, programs, and resources
  • Assist staff in developing videos for YouTube and CHOP websites to promote CVP research and programming with the CHOP Creative Services Department
  • Support the execution of a promotional plan to commemorate CVP’s 10 year anniversary; this may involve event planning, website updates, social media planning, and the writing and production of collateral materials
  • Update and organize violence prevention image library on the Outreach Share drive to help the team find CHOP approved photos more efficiently for digital use
  • Assist with metrics reporting across digital platforms 

Skills development opportunities: Translating research into actionable messages to prevent child injury; exposure to health and safety promotion using research-based messages and strategies; exposure to web content management/ development using Search Engine Optimization (SEO) principles; use of professional social media to promote child and youth injury prevention; stakeholder network development
 
Prior experience with any of the following is valued: MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT); professional use of social media or blogging (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Hootsuite); video production; web content development on Drupal platforms; digital communications strategy measurement; writing for the web and social media; translation of research for lay audiences. Students majoring in Communications/ PR; Journalism; Marketing; English; Writing; or Public Health can make the most of this Digital Communications Intern position.

Additional considerations:
  • Internship length is 10 weeks. Specific start and end dates are flexible based on candidate needs.
  • The digital communications intern will work full-time (40 hours/week) in a hybrid capacity. At least 2 days/week will be on-site at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Roberts Center for Pediatric Research.
  • Rising senior and minimum 3.0 GPA preferred.
  • Estimated pay is $14.31/hour.
