Laboratory Manager - Ginty Lab

The lab of Dr. David Ginty at Harvard Medical School uses approaches in molecular genetics, anatomy, physiology, behavior, and systems neurobiology to understand mammalian somatosensory neurons and central nervous system circuits that underlie our sense of touch. They also seek to define mechanisms of somatosensory system development and dysfunction of somatosensory circuitry in disease states. About the Lab Manager role:
You will hold an integral role within the lab – directing the day-to-day operations involved in running the lab and serving as the liaison between the lab and various external partners (Harvard Medical School, HHMI, etc.). What you’ll do:
  • Writing animal protocols and ensuring compliance with institutional and Federal guidelines, including DEA and Massachusetts state registrations, environmental health and laboratory safety, and animal care regulations.
  • Providing training, supervision, and record maintenance in the name of the principal investigator and be able to command the respect of technicians and highly scientifically trained doctoral level scientists.
  • Maintenance of lab reagents (such as plasmids, antibodies, mouse lines, etc.), their databases, and handling import/export of all mouse requests.
  • Maintenance of equipment, infrastructure, and space allocation.
  • Onboarding of new personnel and oversight of all lab personnel (approximately 30 team members), including ensuring their training and compliance with all internal and external governing bodies.
  • As primary point of contact for all lab communications, collaborating closely with vendors, ordering of supplies, maintenance of inventories, service contracts, and repairs of equipment while maintaining attention to the sources and uses of grant funds for these needs.
  • Initiation and management of orders using B2P and other methods and tracking supplies and expenditures on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
  • Assisting with editing grants, manuscripts, proposals, presentations, and other documents.
  • Performing mouse husbandry, genotyping, and other tasks in support of lab team members’ experiments.

What you bring:
  • A bachelor’s degree in a scientific field is required. Interested candidates with graduate degrees (master’s, PhD, etc.) are welcome to apply.
  • Significant previous experience working in a research laboratory, preferably with experience in a management capacity.
  • Previous experience with mouse research, including mouse handling.
  • Previous experience training other people on various protocols.
  • Strong sense of self-motivation, integrity, trustworthiness, and ability to work in a diverse environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Passion for efficiency, operational excellence, and process improvement.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of computers and MS Office software.

HHMI is flexible to hire either a Laboratory Manager I or a Laboratory Manager II based on the chosen candidate's education, skills, and years of experience. A Laboratory Manager I typically has a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of relevant laboratory work experience. A Laboratory Manager II typically has a master’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) and at least 6 years of relevant laboratory work experience.

Compensation Range:
Laboratory Manager I – $70,070 (minimum) - $87,500 (midpoint) - $113,740 (maximum)
Laboratory Manager II – $84,150 (minimum) - $105,200 (midpoint) - $136,840 (maximum)
Pay Type: Annual

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range. 

Physical Requirements:
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
