TRUE Market Research and Development Intern, Bilingual Spanish

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., focused on proving that better buildings equal better lives. USGBC established the LEED rating system to support this vision. LEED is the most widely used green building program in the world and is helping to transform buildings, communities, and cities around the world. Today, people know that if they are in a LEED certified building, they are using fewer natural resources, experiencing a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment, and removing some of the environmental burden from their community.

USGBC is seeking a bilingual Spanish intern to support the market development for GBCI’s TRUE certification and the TRUE Advisor certificate program in Latin America - which consists of a variety of activities focused on identifying market opportunities and building customer relationships. TRUE is a certification program focused on zero waste achievement for facilities, events, and construction projects. Join us in the advancement of green certification programs and the fight against climate change, specifically in zero waste and waste reduction.

The role of the TRUE Market Research and Development – Latin America intern will be to monitor industry activity and identify potential opportunities to feed into the TRUE Latin America market development pipeline. The work will focus on market analysis, opportunity tracking and establishing proper points of contact in order to build relationships. Research skills, the ability to synthesize information in the context of the green building industry, and strong writing skills are critical. The intern will also provide support as needed to other, high-priority team projects over the term. The position requires the ability to take initiative, think strategically, work well independently and with a team, meet deadlines and bring tasks to closure.

This internship position will begin March 2023 and run until mid-August 2023 with a commitment of ~15-30 hours per week. This internship is a remote position preferably located on the west coast (PST). This is a PAID internship.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
Market Analysis
  • Collaborate with GBCI Latin America team and Green Building Councils – Latin America to determine key growth areas in region and TRUE opportunities for presentations, client engagement and media
  • Leverage existing industry knowledge to synthesize data and research into customized offerings for specific members, markets, or sectors to better address and meet the needs of existing members/clients, and inform/evolve strategies that seek to develop new opportunities with prospective clients
  • Identify and target prospective clients through research and USGBC/GBCI data analysis to develop a pipeline of opportunities
  • Research and develop analysis of zero waste activities including zero waste certification competitors and/or collaborators in the region
  • Identify and conduct outreach to potential partner organizations – NGOs, institutions or municipalities - which may help support the growth of TRUE in Latin America
  • Research and track existing and potential sustainability policies in Latin America, by country, which help support TRUE (i.e. zero waste plans, producer responsibility, plastic pollution, etc.)
  • Research and understand the different market sectors in order to develop a strong understanding of TRUE’s value proposition for each sector
  • Research and analyze issues related to TRUE and prepare a report
Opportunity tracking
  • Identify potential market opportunities via active monitoring of external sources for TRUE clients
  • Identify appropriate project/building information and relevant contacts associated with them
  • Develop and manage a pipeline of TRUE opportunity records in Salesforce
Communication & Outreach
  • Develop a glossary of zero waste terms in Spanish
  • Develop and review TRUE marketing and education materials in Spanish
  • Update list of current TRUE Advisors weekly and conduct outreach
  • Support the delivery of TRUE virtual and in person events – manages event website details and logistics and conducts follow up with registrants
  • Regularly monitor GBCI marketing channels in order to write and edit in GBCI’s style and voice and has, or can acquire quickly, an understanding of GBCI and its programs, notably TRUE
  • Demonstrate proficiency managing established outreach model, which seeks to establish contact with potential opportunity contacts via email and phone
  • Regularly draft, updates and revises communications templates identifying new ways to showcase and promote TRUE to new audiences or to existing audiences in new ways
  • Assist other members of the team with writing and editing needs, including occasional blog posts, articles and formal and informal letters, ensuring that all content submitted is of the highest possible quality

After completing the internship, the individual will be able to:
  • Demonstrate experience in non-profit workplace and sector

  • Clearly express concepts of sustainability and green building, with a thorough understanding of USGBC products and how it works to affect global climate change
  • Demonstrate familiarity with key players and effective strategies in the global green building movement especially in Latin America
  • Demonstrate experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders in pursuit of shared goals
  • Demonstrate success managing individual workflow and identifying appropriate goals and objectives
  • Clearly communicate zero waste policies, philosophies and practices in English and Spanish
  • Utilize Salesforce to manage opportunity records
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail, flexibility in working with a variety of internal and external partners, ability to work against hard deadlines, and creativity in problem solving.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:
  • Very strong command of the Spanish language in business and sustainability terms, written and verbal, preferably first language
  • Current enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate program of study required
  • Degree or specialty in business, environmental science, nonprofit management, communications, environmental design, or data science (or relevant experience) preferred
  • Strong organizational, research and project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated professionalism and the ability to manage sensitive and/or confidential information
  • General understanding of TRUE certification, environmental performance rating systems and/or the sustainability industry in general
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite – particularly Excel and PowerPoint required
  • Creative problem solving and go-getter attitude, seeks process and program improvement
  • Commitment to USGBC/GBCI mission

  • Experience working on sustainability initiatives within the built environment (operations, real estate, construction)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with diverse interests across all levels of the organization which has a team-oriented, collaborative environment

  • Ability to organize and manage large amounts of information and data
  • Familiarity with cloud-based CRM systems, such as Salesforce, a plus
