Application Development Summer Intern 2023

Norfolk Southern Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, seeks a highly motivated and qualified candidate for internship with strong development and analytical skills with proficiency in one or more of the following: .NET, Java, or a front-end development framework. This individual will work on a dynamic, Agile project team developing and supporting one of our highly available and mission critical applications.

The successful candidate will possess a positive attitude with excellent communication and analytical skills with a focus on results. This person must also be able to work closely with the business partners and other cross-functional IT teams to ensure efficient system and code design, assist with development, review code, and deliverables are thoroughly unit tested. 

As a part of our innovative pricing software development team, you will take part in the development of cutting-edge solutions solving the challenging needs of our business. You will build solutions from the ground up, starting with investigating design approaches, prototyping new solutions, and evaluating technical feasibility. You will be responsible for all aspects of development including design, development, testing, and maintenance of key systems. You will work in a dynamic environment to deliver a forward-looking user experience while maintaining high-quality software. 

Education
Actively seeking a 4-yr college degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics

Responsibilities
  • Work with the Product Owners to create a comprehensive design based on business needs.
  • Code high quality code based on detailed designs that meet requirements.
  • Provide support for mission critical applications.
  • Effectively communicate with end-users, co-workers, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative and attention to detail during daily operations.
  • Deliver innovative, engaging web applications using the latest software technologies.
  • Work with outside vendors and external teams to collect and confirm business and technical requirements.
  • Identify design problems and devise solid technical solutions.
  • Continuously improve and enforce best practices, coding, and UI/UX standards.

Skills

Required:
  • The ability to enhance, customize, and debug existing web applications
  • Working knowledge on Java or .NET
  • Working knowledge on a JavaScript library – React or Angular

Preferred Skills:
  • Working knowledge on relational databases: DB2 or SQL Server
  • High-level understanding of system design and architecture.
