AmeriCorps Bilingual (Spanish) Early Literacy Tutor

Literacy First is an early literacy tutoring AmeriCorps program that provides intensive, effective tutoring in Spanish to K-2 students in Austin, TX. We focus on achieving racially equitable outcomes for emerging readers in Title I schools by providing one-to-one tutoring to ensure all children are reading at or above grade level by third grade. We use an explicit, research-based curriculum of scripted lesson plans to address critical reading skills. Tutor training and support will be provided by our expert literacy coaches.

What's Involved? 
·      Tutors serve for a 7-month term from November 1, 2023 through May 24, 2024.
o  This includes paid training starting on November 1st
  • Conduct daily 1-on-1 tutoring sessions (20-30 minutes each) in Spanish to 8-10 K-2nd grade students at one assigned Austin elementary school campus
  • Teach using a highly structured, research-based Spanish literacy curriculum 
  • Weekly individualized support from your literacy expert coach

2 positions are available:


36 hours per week: Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM + hour of planning and prep
[900 hours total in 7 months]
 
26 hours per week: Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM + hour of planning and prep
[675 hours total in 7 months]

Who we’re looking for:
  • Interest in literacy, education, community service, social justice, or non-profits 
  • Desire to work with young students ages 5-8 
  • Ability to work cohesively on a team 
  • Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence 
  •  Bilingual applicants must be comfortable speaking in Spanish.

Bilingual Tutors will be teaching students to read in Spanish whose first or primary language is Spanish. Bilingual tutors will be set up for success with scripted lesson plans and ongoing weekly Spanish support. Bilingual applicants need only basic proficiency skills in speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish.

AmeriCorps Requirements: 
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien 
  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Pass a criminal background check 
  • Be at least 17 years of age 

Additional Considerations:
  • Tutors will walk to classrooms on their assigned campus in between tutoring sessions to bring students to and from the tutoring area. 
  • Tutors will be sitting for most of their work time interacting with students. 
  • Tutors must be able to direct a lesson and maintain focus in an environment where other tutoring sessions will be taking place and the noise level may be distracting at times.
