Cultural Landscape (Preservation Maintenance) Research Intern

Work with the National Park Service this summer!

Compensation: $17/hour full/time + paid time off

Project: The Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation Associate (Intern) will focus on cultural landscape preservation and materials conservation to produce a Turf Management Guide for Historic Cemeteries. As part of their work, the Associate will complete a report documenting the best management practices for places in our national cemeteries where vegetation intersects with historic grave markers and monuments. Equipment and chemicals can affect stone, concrete, and marble. Conversely, materials used to restore and maintain historic headstones and monuments can damage soils and vegetation. Building upon the work of a previous Associate focused on monument materials, this Associate will concentrate on turf management, guided by a national advisory group of historic preservationists, landscape architects, and turf-grass scientists.

This is an excellent opportunity for a plant and soil science, history, geography, historic preservation, turf, horticulture or botany student or recent graduate to learn more about public land management. This internship position may be hosted remotely, and applicants with strong writing and research skills encouraged to apply, regardless of location.

Who are we? The National Park Service’s Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation works with national parks to manage cultural landscapes and historic structures that reflect our national heritage. The Center provides research, planning, stewardship, and education services to parks in the Northeast Region, from Maine to Virginia.

Enrichment + Training: The Associate will be able to participate in many training and networking opportunities. Check out our internship program to learn more! “Designing the Parks Internship Blog” at https://designingtheparksoclp.wordpress.com/
