Great Books Summer Program Counselor/Teaching Assistant

Now in our 23rd summer, Great Books Summer Program offers online and on-campus academic camp experiences for middle and high school students who like to read and discuss great works of literature. The program was developed in association with the non-profit Great Books Foundation and utilizes the "shared inquiry" method of exploring the meaning of texts through questioning and discussion.

Applications are currently being accepted for Program Assistant positions. Our online program runs in two time zones, domestic and Beijing. Our on-campus programs will be on the following campuses this summer: Amherst College, Haverford College, Northwestern University, and Stanford University.
Ideal candidates for Program Assistant (PA) positions will represent a diverse audience and be responsible, dedicated, and flexible undergraduates, postgraduates, or recent graduates. PAs must be personally reliable and team-oriented, as well as conscious of their responsibilities as role models for young people. A love of literature and intellectual discussion is important. All fields of study are welcome, though the position may have special appeal to literature, humanities, and education students.

Each PA is responsible for supervising and engaging a small group (pod) of students aged 10 to 18, supporting their intellectual and social growth, and exercising concern and care for their physical and emotional well-being. PAs lead informal discussions with their pods on a daily basis, and they act as Teaching Assistants in formal group discussions. In addition, PAs lead informal activities of their choice such as writing, drawing, games or other social opportunities during break times. PAs work closely with the program faculty to create an exciting learning environment; they collaborate with the program coordinators to ensure that each of the student participants has the most positive and fulfilling experience possible. As the primary liaison between the pods, the program faculty, and the administration, PAs are the backbone of the Great Books Summer Programs.

PAs are on duty 6 days with one full day off per week. Duration of the position varies with some commitments as short as two-weeks and others lasting for three or more. This allows great flexibility for applications to select the commitment that works best for you. For all positions there is a paid orientation prior to the start of camp. Competitive camp compensation.
