Planner (Zoning/Historic Preservation)

The Community Development Department is seeking a charismatic, energetic, team-oriented individual that is highly motivated to perform entry to intermediate level professional work conducting site plan review and issuing permits for compliance with applicable development regulations, including the zoning ordinance. The selected incumbent will also serve as staff liaison to the City's Architectural Review Board and undertakes special projects related to the City's Historic Overlay District and historic preservation.
 
While the successful applicant will primarily provide plan, permit and architectural review and serve as the City’s initial point of contact for citizen’s zoning related questions, they will also be part of a diverse planning team with a variety of opportunities for special projects and citizen engagement. 

The hiring range for this position is $66,976.00 -$96,699.20, based on education and experience.

**This position may be filled as a Planner I or Planner II based on qualifications of applicant pool.

Essential Job Functions
Typical duties include:
  • Providing general customer service to City officials, staff and the public about zoning and land use regulations and policies.
  • Processing of building, zoning, architectural review board, special use permits, rezoning, and other land use applications;
  • Support of the Historic Overlay District and Architecture Review Board, including the maintenance of the Historic Design Guidelines, Inventory of Structures, and related resources;
  • Supporting the implementation of the Comprehensive Plan, and reviewing and updating the Comprehensive Plan as required;
  • Preparing studies, reports, and delivering presentations regarding planning activities to the City Council, Planning Commission, and other community organizations.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in City or Regional Planning, Historic Preservation, Geography, Public Administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must obtain and maintain certification as a Certified Zoning Official (CZO) or AICP within two (2) years of hire; may be required to possess additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the City; must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license.

Language stipend available for Bilingual (English/Spanish) language skills.
