OVERVIEW
The Youth Engagement Apprentice is directly involved in the facilitation of the Next Narrative Monologue Competition, Youth Engagement classes and workshops the Student Matinee Program, and Teen Nights. Tasks include: communicating with schools to encourage participation in our Student Matinee performances; writing articles for our show-specific Play Guides and connecting the Guides with Common Core academic standards; designing curriculum; assisting and leading in-classroom and afterschool workshops; scheduling teaching artists; writing contracts; attending inter-departmental meetings; and other administrative tasks. This apprenticeship offers a well-rounded experience in both the administrative and direct-contact areas of theater education. The supervisor for this apprenticeship is Deanna Martinez, Associate Director of Arts Engagement - Youth & Community.
 
PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES 
At the end of this apprenticeship, participants will have a deep understanding of: 
  • Lesson planning and assessment 
  • Best classroom management techniques when working with large groups 
  • Incorporating state standards for theater education in their practice 
  • Generating content that links a production to current events and academic standards in our Play Guides 
  • Logistics associated with running theater programs 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 
  • Be fully comfortable around middle-school and high-school students 
  • Experience working with students 
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, and Outlook) with the ability and enthusiasm to learn 
  • Excellent written and communication skills 
  • A strong sense of social justice and racial equity analysis, as well as strong cultural competency when working with a variety of diverse communities 
  • Commitment to racial equity and social justice practices, and a desire to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive work environment
