Emergency Response & Security Management Intern

Plains All American (PAA) is an industry-leading transportation and midstream provider specializing in transportation, storage, processing and marketing solutions for crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs). We own an extensive network of pipeline transportation, terminalling, storage and gathering assets in key crude oil and NGL producing basins and transportation corridors and at major market hubs in the United States and Canada. On average, PAA handles more than 6 million barrels per day of crude oil and NGL in its Transportation segment. The company is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Emergency Response & Security Management Intern  
 
Plains has a great opportunity for a highly motivated student to join our Emergency Response & Security Management team for a 12-week internship in our Houston office, beginning May 22, 2023. This is a great opportunity to gain invaluable industry experience to supplement your studies. Look forward to the opportunity to work in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment!  

Responsibilities: 

  • Gain an understanding of the oil and gas midstream industry, Health Safety and Environmental practices, hazardous materials concepts and response requirements, Plains Emergency Response & Security Management (ER&SM) Program, and associated regulatory (PHMSA, EPA, DOT, etc) requirements; 
  • Support Maintenance of the ER&SM and HSE programs; 
  • Support the development and execution of emergency response and security exercises and training; 
  • Use existing templates and plans, develop materials and scenarios for emergency response training and exercises; 
  • Lead and/or support the delivery of select Environmental Emergency exercises in the U.S.; 
  • Complete post exercise and training reports (After Action Reports); 
  • Participate in/support actual emergency management activities if needed; 
  • Post and track action items in tracking software; 
  • Conduct internal assurance activities and data analysis as required by the program;  
  • Gain knowledge of the Incident Command System and be able to apply it within exercises and training scenarios; 
  • Develop the ability to use the tools, resources and forms required for emergency response; 
  • Perform/participate in security audits; and 
  • Note: This role may require travel in the USA and to Canada (if COVID 19 restrictions allow). 
 
Qualifications: 

  • Interns must be pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Environmental Science, Emergency Management, or a related educational field; 
  • Prior intern is an asset; 
  • Preference for applicants with prior Incident Command training; 
  • Proficiency with MS Office including Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook; 
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills; 
  • Demonstrated comfort with public speaking and/or training delivery; 
  • Proven flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business conditions; 
  • Excellent computer and communication skills;  
  • Ability to work well within a fast-paced team environment and under minimal supervision; 
  • Interns must be able and willing to relocate themselves to Houston for the duration of the work term; 
  • Interns must be able to commit to a full 12-week internship starting May 22, 2023, to be considered for the program; 
  • The successful candidate must comply with the Company’s Drug & Alcohol Policy including pre-employment testing; and 
  • The successful candidate must provide satisfactory references and complete a Criminal Background Check.

For our summer internship program, we look for sophomores, juniors, or seniors, working toward a bachelor's degree with solid academic credentials along with significant extracurricular involvement. Strong written and verbal communications skills are key to our business as well as having strong attention to detail. Students must demonstrate effective planning and organizational skills, proficiency with Microsoft products (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and a strong desire to learn more about the Oil and Gas business.
