Technical Writing and Documentation for Spacecraft Telecomm Systems (SCaN)

Seeking an intern to write technical summaries, reports, white papers, and/or publications for the Flight Microwave and Telecommunication Systems Branch at Goddard Space Flight Center. The primary goal is to provide documentation of ongoing and upcoming spacecraft developments. In particular, the student will provide technical documentation on the current developments of telecommunication systems for the Roman Space Telescope, Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) lunar rover, and Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) spacecraft. These documents will capture the detailed design aspects, technical processes, accomplishments, and lessons learned of these space flight telecommunication developments.
The intern will review technical documentation, interview the engineers who have designed these systems and are leading their development, witness the development and testing of these spacecraft systems, and finally provide summarized technical reports and papers.

The intern will work with their mentors and colleagues to outline the documents, find necessary resources, and make introductions but will otherwise independently lead the effort and manage their time.

NASA requires all interns to have U.S. citizenship and a 3.0 GPA. The internship is paid; stipend varies based on education level.

Strong candidates will have:
  • Strong written communication skills and a background in technical writing
  • Technical knowledge of radio frequencies, electromagnetics, and telecommunication systems (preferred but not required)
  • Good time management and organizational skills
