Life Science Research Professional 1, Molecular & Cellular Physiology

The Maduke Laboratory in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Physiology at Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 (LSRP1). As a member of a diverse and friendly team, the LRSP1 will collaborate with lab members to conduct innovative fundamental research on ion channels and transporters. The position also includes lab management tasks such as ordering supplies, maintaining chemical inventory, and documenting lab safety records.

Lab overview: Much of our work focuses on a class of proteins known as the CLC family of chloride-transport proteins. This fascinating family of proteins bridges major classes of membrane proteins by consisting of both passive ion channels and active transporters. Projects on CLC proteins include studies to determine molecular mechanisms, to determine physiological function in the brain, and to develop novel therapeutics. The lab also includes projects to understand how ultrasound affects ion-channel function during neuromodulation.

The LRSP1 will work in a collaborative environment and may work on one or more of the project areas described here: https://med.stanford.edu/maduke/research.html. The position requires the ability to conduct experiments independently, with access to advice from the PI and other lab members, and with training available for any new techniques that need to be learned. We seek an individual who is enthusiastic and motivated to perform research to the highest standards leading to fundamental new discoveries. The LRSP1 may work on multiple related projects and will support daily lab functions and must manage time efficiently in doing so. Some flexibility in work schedule is possible within the constraints of the experiments. Duties include:
  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab based on knowledge of scientific theory.
  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Plan and perform standard molecular biology and biochemistry procedures: e.g., site-directed mutagenesis, PCR and DNA cloning, DNA and RNA synthesis, DNA and protein gel electrophoresis, column chromatography, Western blots.
  • Maintain cultures of HEK and insect cells for general lab use.
  • Express and purify proteins from E. coli, mammalian and insect cells.
  • Plan and perform experiments to analyze ion-channel and transporter function
  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with lab members.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • Proficiency with standard molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR, mutagenesis) and biochemical techniques (protein purification, column chromatography, gel electrophoresis, Western blot).
  • Proficiency with cell culture techniques (mammalian and bacterial).
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, attention to detail, and scientific judgment.
  • Highly motivated, dedicated, and independent, with ability to work under deadlines.
  • Supportive team player.
  • Highly organized.
  • Excellent laboratory management skills.
  • General computer skills and ability to efficiently learn and master new software.
  • Experience with electrophysiology would be of benefit but is not essential.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

The expected pay range for this position is $54,000 to $71,000 per annum.
