Post Doctoral Researcher- Radiation Countermeasures Research (Prevention, Therapeutic development and testing)

This role at SRI allows you to follow your passion for research in this area all the way through - from beginning to end of the cycle. Our work is both grant and contract based (NIH) as well as developing translational work in the area of pharma research and development, as well as efficacy testing though pre-clinical and even into the clinic and beyond.
We are looking to meet our current research needs AND grow the breadth of expertise we have in radiation biology. Our current ongoing portfolio of funded work includes studies of radiation exposure effects using in-vivo models, apoptosis, and longer term effects of exposure. Starting here, we are looking for the right candidate to develop your own area of radiation research.
Responsibilities
SRI seeks a post-doctoral candidate or early career scientist with a strong background in radiation biology. Candidate will work closely with a group of experienced translational development scientists and have the opportunity to design and conduct a broad range of studies aimed at testing the safety and efficacy of potential medical countermeasures against radiation effects and developing animal models suitable for safety and/or efficacy testing. In addition, there will be opportunities to conduct toxicology studies for pre-clinical safety testing as required by the FDA. Growth opportunities in project leadership exists for candidates that are able to make substantial contributions to NIH funded projects and obtain independent funding support.
Growth opportunities in the following areas of research (and others) include: Tissue protection from radiation, safety pharmacology studies, toxicology studies, efficacy testing of therapeutics from external partners, developing therapeutics for specific health effects (short and long term) caused from radiation exposure.
The position is located at SRI International campus in Menlo Park, California.
Qualifications
A recent Ph.D. graduate in biological sciences with an emphasis in radiation biology is preferred. Candidates may also come from Toxicology programs, Radiotherapy programs, or any medical program. The candidate should be a highly motivated scientist able to independently monitor and conduct experiments as a part of the Radiation Countermeasures team, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
The ideal candidate should:
- Demonstrate independence and initiative to develop, conduct, analyze, and report on assigned research projects under the direction of the principal investigator.
- Has hands on experience working with in vivo models
- Experience in the operation of a radiation source is a plus, but not required
- Has a broad technical skill set, and can perform, supervise and interpret a wide array of standard biological assays or techniques for the assessment of tissue injury or molecular sensing of normal tissue function common to radiation and other animal models.
- Must be willing to work with, train and/or supervise team members as needed.
- Drafts protocols, SOPs, study reports, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals; presents findings at domestic and international workshops and conferences. Has established a publication record as a first author.
- Must have excellent communication, scientific, writing, organizational, record-keeping, data handling and problem-solving skills. Experience in GLP a plus but not required.
- Must be a U.S. Citizenshp with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance.
Salary for this position will be between $64,400 and $72,000 depending on several factors, including market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles.
