Residential Teaching Assistant

Founded in 1975, Eden began as a small, family-oriented school for individuals with autism and today offers classes from pre-K through age 21. In addition, Eden provides services for adults with autism including residential and employment programs, as well as providing clinical and training support for families and professionals.

Introduction
We have a seasonal career opportunity for a full-time Summer Camp Counselor/Teaching Assistant in our Residential Camp program, which runs for 8 weeks—beginning June 25 and ending August 17, 2019. Our summer camp program will give you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience; provides 6 days of intensive training including crisis management training, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and will give you the satisfaction of supporting and improving the lives of children and adults with autism. The camp site is located in Port Murray, NJ (near Hackettstown) and you will be required to commit to the program for the full 8 weeks, with a work schedule of four days on and one day off. The camp is a traditional residential camp which means living on camp is required for your four days on. Our students range from age 11 to age 21. The highly talented individual must demonstrate a passionate commitment to Eden’s Mission and want to deliver in a high-value and mission-driven organization.

Primary Purpose
To assist and teach children (age 11 to 21) with Autism perform essential functions while attending summer camp; show them a fun time and provide a safe environment. As the Teaching Assistant/Camp Counselor, you will be working with the children to achieve their goals and objectives based on their Individual Education Program (IEP); provide a structured day and have a fun time at summer camp with planned activities, such as swimming; taking them on a weekly field trip; Art & crafts; Music & Movement; and so much more.
Primary Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are to be performed under the direct supervision of a Certified Teacher.
  • Attend, participate and complete the mandatory training for crisis management and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
  • Assist leadership staff by providing individual attention to student(s) during individual and group sessions including:
o   Maintain a positive working rapport with students.
o   Implement programs (teaching and behavior support plans) using behavioral model appropriately and consistently.
o   Appropriately manage maladaptive behaviors including tantrums, self-injury, and aggression
o   Daily record keeping:
o   Collect teaching data
o   Collect behavior management data
o   Maintain graphs on all teaching and behavior programs.
o   Implement age appropriate reinforcement systems.
o   Assist in organizing group activities.
o   Conduct and participate in group activities utilizing the leader/prompter model.
o   Assist other staff members in supervising students on all activities as needed.
o   Respect students’ rights.
o   Participate in swim instruction during each student’s group session.
o   Cover night duties as determined by the program schedule.



Job Requirements
Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent; strongly prefer Bachelor’s degree or active enrollment in an undergraduate program.

Experience: Entry Level; prefer experience working with developmentally disabled individuals, including autism.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit/stand for extended periods of time during the work day, including bending, squatting, kneeling, stretching and stooping; and reaching above shoulder level.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Professional Crisis Management (PCM) certification at a P2 level.
  • Mobility to ensure the safety of students at all times.
  • Basic Swimming Skills

Specialized Skills and Knowledge:
·        Demonstrated commitment to helping individuals with autism.
·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
·        Ability to effectively interact with students and other teaching assistants and employees.
·        Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service within all aspects of the job duties on a consistent basis.

Background Check
The qualified candidate must successfully complete a background check, including criminal check and fingerprinting, mandatory drug testing, motor vehicle check (if applicable), reference checks, salary verification, and completion of a medical/ health physical and mantoux test.
